tommy, i have a widescreen tv (60"), and the dvd i bought was widescreen version. Yes, I see the letterbox also. It is normal to see the black bars on top and bottom.
There is nothing wrong with this. Enjoy.

CodeRed,

Go into your DVD player's menu. There should be a setting, 4:3 or 16:9. If you set it at 16:9 the black bars should be removed as the actual film then cfills the screen of your TV.
It could be that it will not work with the SW DVDs.

DVI is nice because instead of having your DVD player convert it from a digital singal to analog, then your TV convert it from analog to digital it is a straight digital signal. If your player upconverts to 1080i keep it that way, as long as your TV is compatable with 1080i that is. Some HD TVs are not, especially LCD's. It may be your TV is only 720p compatible.

See, the HD format is still not official. Many were making 720i and 720p sets that are not 1080i, yet all are sold as 'HDTV.'

It has also held up the new DVD standard, which has it's own industry fighting between two formats!

You TV may be 1080i compatable, but it's native resolution is 720p(the resolution it works best in). I would try 720p and see if that helps.

I still have not had any luck with the settings on my DVD player, or TV. I still get the "letterbox" effect on my Star Wars DVDs. :(

Thank you Blade...Since I have asked many questions on that forum before, it would have been too easy for me to look there I suppose...

Thanks for the info, and for reminding me how stupid I really am! :)
