I agree with you guys.
If your a professional sports athlete, I don't care what sport you play. You should NEVER charge into the stands after a fan. It's a no win situation that will turn very ugly. It just makes me sick to see an old man get trampled over and kids cryin in fear at a NBA game where you go to have a good time. Because a few bad apples, possibly drunk, threw a cup at of all people Ron Artest.
This game had all the recipes for a brawl of this magnitude to happen. These two teams have had a rivalry going for a while. The Pistons were getting beat badly in their own house all night and Big Ben's shove to the face of Artest boiled over their frustration and gave fans a chance to react. The NBA is the only major sport where fans can reach out and touch players(courtside seats) and fans easily have access to the court given the small security force around the bottom bowl of the arena during a regular season game. Security was way outnumbered and with fights popping up everywhere, there wasn't much they could do.
It's going to be interesting to see the numerous lawsuits and how the Detroit Police Department handles this situation.
A huge black eye for the NBA.

I don't think Artest going after the fan was right, but I think a lot of athletes would have, especially since they're already fired up from playing hard all game. He definitely didn't make a good decision, but I think a lot of athletes might have the same reaction. Making all that money doesn't change anything. If you're pissed off at something, you're not thinking well that's ok, cause I make so much money, at least not at that moment. Because you make lots of money doesn't mean you have to take any more abuse than anyone else. Plus I'll bet lots of those cups probably had ice in them, and getting hit with ice cubes probably hurts.
Also, I think alcohol probably played a role. I don't know how many of the fans were drunk, but I'll bet a good portion of them were. Alcohol sales should stop at half time. Can't tell you how many times I've left an event noticing the guys getting into the cars around me can barely stand. Even if they don't start something during the game, you can tell they'd like to. Some of them start stuff with fans sitting right next to them that aren't even doing anything. They can spoil the fun for everyone around, yelling abusive things while people's kids are just a few seats away. To me, that just ain't right. And allowing those types of fans to be so close to the players is just setting things up for this type of situation. Some arenas for other sports have a barrier of some kind between the field of play and the fans, and usuallly there's a security presence right there to discourage that kind of behavior. I think all sporting events will need a barrier, since fans just can't control themselves. And if alcohol sales already stop at half time there, I apologize, but I thought I heard the ESPN guys say they didn't. I'm in Buffalo, and we don't have a basketball team, but at Sabres events you have the glass, and at Bills events there's a row of security on the field around the entire stadium that keep watch on the fans. Basketball may need to do the same.
Everyone's to blame, but things that I'd correct are a barrier of security around the court and stopping alcohol sales at halftime. Just my $.02.

Even if he knew who the fan was you do not charge after someone for throwing a drink in a plastic cup at you.
Do that to me...and I think I'll have the same reaction - at work, at home, at the bar (well...especially, at the bar).
I just think that you have to realize that these guys are human too - they just make a hell of a lot more money than we do (most of them will be in the same (or worse) financial shape as you and I in 20-years). Fans in the stands throwing cups, chairs, ice, whatever...they deserve to have their ass handed to them. The guys on the floor - especially, those confronting the athletes - should be pummelled. Yell, scream, taunt, etc. but once you start assaulting...well, I'd come after you....
Give a man a fish and he'll eat for a day. Teach a man to fish and he'll sit in the boat and drink beer all day...

Artest's foul on Wallace was flagrant...he made no attempt at the ball. The officials didn't make the call then, and Wallace responded by shoving Artest and we all know what happend. This kind of thing is usually building for a while and the Ref's had to know that they needed to keep a tight reign on it.
A few weeks ago I saw something very interesting on ESPN...there was a Soccer game where a fan threw a lighter and hit the ref in the face...the penalty (from FIFA I guess) was that the next two games between those teams would be played in a completely empty stadium...no fans at all. The next game in Detroit should be in a gym with a TV camera and some scorekeepers...if the league started doing that then you might see the fans policing themselves more.
