To SLI or not to SLI

Off topic, but don't go too far overboard - after all, we are watching...heh.

It is a way nvidia came up with to get people to buy 2 video cards. A gimmik.

My dual SLI 7800GTX's ROCK!!!

I run 1024x768 and everything on high and have excellent frame rate! :D

Would run at 1600x1200, but I can barely see targets to shoot at the current resolution. ;)

I will switch to 1600x1200 when I attach the computer to my projector (108" diagonal). :D

it's a way for people to increase performance without buying another brand new card.

that way, you can buy a 6800gt today and play the latest games. then when a future game needs more speed, you simply purchase another 6800gt which will be very cheap by then, and you almost double your performance instead of buying a new $500 card.

it makes sense.

lol, my 9700 pro was $180 a year ago, and runs bf2 at max settings at 1024@768 with AA/AF off, why would purchasing anouther 9700 Pro (which is crappy by new standards) when I get get more performance from a singe 6600Gt For ABout $150? DX support and all, the 9700 Pro is only DX9, not DX9c, so 2 in SLI wouldn't be as fast as one 6600Gt.

SLI only makes sense if you are a hardcore gamer that wants to have the best FPS and picture quality all the time. It's not worth it for people like you, because you're happy with running the game at 1024 X 768 without AA and AF. SLI is meant to keep your gaming rig fast without spending a ton of cash on brand new video cards every 6 months, because you can simply add another card when you feel you want more performance.

If you only upgrade your machine for games every 2 years, do not buy SLI. But if you try to keep your system fast and upgrade once a year, it will save you money in the long run because adding in another 6800gt in 6 months (which will be cheap by then) will give you excellent gaming performance, and is less expensive than purchasing a brand new 7800GTX ultra which will probably be the top card by then.

so say you own a 6800gt. in 6 months time, you have the choice of:

A) buying an additional 6800gt that will not be very expensive, and will double your gaming performance

or

B) spending $600 on the latest video card.

Like I said, SLI is worth it for the gamer who wants to play with speed all of the time. It's not a gimmick, it saves people who upgrade all the time a ton of money.

and just so you know, the latest ATI cards don't support Shader Model 3.0 which is in DX9.0c because it's not useful technology at this point in time.

You could purchase 1 7800GTX and it would stil be faster than 2 6600GT. :)

SLI doesn't make sense in any way shape or form to save money!

Oh yeah suuure buying a top of the line $600 card RIGHT now and later paying for anouther $200 card? lol
Why not just get a middle range card now for $200 that can play all your games at a good resolution at max and a small aa/af setting and get anouther middle range card later that can play the games out then at good setting? :) Seems your SAVING money by NOT using SLI. :) Read inbetween the lines.
