A.M. Foxtrot, so you are from San Antonio ALSO! We could be neighbors and don't even know it! Greetings!
But to subject at hand. Snow, everything that you are hearing, except for the joke thing, is good advise. I spent 20 years in the USAF and ALL of it was in Law Enforcement. Was a very good ride. Since I am from Texas, as well as you, the best place for you is to start out in the military, but you say that you cannot, so the Waco Police Department seems the guys you need to be talking to. However, and I am sort of bias here, but if I was just starting out, I would put in an application to the San Antonio Police Department, since they are the HIGHEST paid police agency in Texas. I know that for a fact and it is well known.
I would not even try for Dallas or Houston, but the Fort Worth PD is good to work for and get promoted. I am in the security consultant business now and keep track of many police departments around San Antonio, and the larger ones inside of Texas. Some, like Wichita Falls PD has a patrol car take-home program in place. After you have been with the WFPD for 2 years, they will furnish you a new marked patrol car that you can take home, and only YOU drive. So there is certain benefits that you have to consider. Shop around for the best deal so to speak, if you are that eager to go into civil law enforcement.
Just my 2 cents worth here.

A.A. (not anti-aircraft) Associate of Arts - a two year degree. Most law enforcement agencies probably want an A.A. degree at a minimum and some probably want a Bachelor's degree. The B.A. is typically a four year degree.
oh, hehe. thanks Jim. Going for my Bachelors now. First day was today, not bad.

Wow, congrats! Sounds like the perfect arrangment, paying for your college while you work with them part time and gain experience. Seriously, that is a sweetheart deal!!

I have been a police officer for five years now in Michigan. The department that I work for only accepts applicants with a bachelor's degree (not sure why). I would strongly suggest getting a BA and maybe minoring in Spanish. Being bilingual would look great on your resume for this type of work. And seeing that you are from Texas, it probably is a requirement. As for the police academy....the university that I went to sends you to a police academy as part of the degree. It actually counted as the remaining 12 credits before the completion of my degree.
Best of luck to you.
