To answer your question Luntatic (I've been through three hurricanes now, Isabelle, Ivan, and Dennis), the outer bands can bring squalls (tightly packed, fast moving thunderstorms) with lightning and tornados, but the majority of the hurricane is just a lot of wind and rain.

Hahaha, bottled water!! People, it comes out of a tap! Just fill up your coolers and a bunch of pitchers. Also fill up the bath tub for washing, etc. Even better, freeze the pitchers (it takes a couple days) and then use them to keep your fridge cold after the power goes out. (Not to mention, it's cold water!)

Surviving a hurricane is easy. Just need enough canned and dry food, a camp stove, and either batteries or a gas lantern (not to be used indoors!). Hardest part is keeping entertained without power, but usually there's enough work clearing debris to fill up your days, and at night the best thing is get together with your neighboors over cards and warm beers. Usually someone has a generator to keep their beers cold.

The only thing I fear is the gas shortage. Not the price, really, it what, adds $20 to your monthly expenses? The problem is there is none to get, and long lines when it is there. Best to get up early and beat the rush to the pumps. But it gets worrisome when you only have 1/4 tank and still can't find a place without bags on the handles.

Anyway, big danger with Rita, besides Galveston, which is being mandaroty evacuated with plenty of public busing, is the damage it can do to offshore rigs and pipelines, as well as the refineries along the coast. As far as people, thanks to Katrina I'm sure most people are evacuating any areas at risk, and plenty areas that aren't.

PS Can you believe, two record storms in one season! Katrina hit, what like 902 or 907 mb, and Rita is at 897 mp. Those are #2 and #3 lowest pressures in recorded history.

Global warming is not a myth, it is also not caused by man.
Every (roughly) 24,000 yrs. the earth goes through
precession (one cycle). This is the natural gyroscopic effect of the earth traveling through space on an orbit while rotating.
The last ice age ended about 12,000 yrs. ago then the
earth started to warm, this puts us right in the middle of the
warm cycle. In a couple thousand yrs. the earth will start
to cool and we will eventually go into another ice age.

Coastal areas and storm surge would be the biggest concern similar to what we saw in Biloxi.

Global warming is a fact. Global warming is caused by man. The irregular swing in temperatures from ice age to hot house is not a regular 'clockwork' thing which can be pinned down to every so and so years.
It is not a question of if man is having an effect on the environment, but how much of an effect he is having.
We as a species have definitely altered the climate of the earth, our home.
When it comes down to specifics though, as in these storms, who can say if these back to back top of the scale storms are symptomatic or merely flukes? The only way we'll be able to tell is if there are many more to come and with an increase in frequency of occourance which can be compared to the past. Statistics, in a word, will tell the story but we can only get that information after the event.

Rita... Category 5. Wow. Two in one season. HOLY CRAP!

Global Warming is not a myth, we just don't know how much or better yet, how fast we can change the climate. I don't think these hurricanes have anything to do with Global Warming, not one bit. Still, we already have so many compelling reasons to get off fossil fuel (Global Warming included) that we might as well work toward that goal. The retards that are pushing Kyoto need to change it to include India and China though. As it stands now, all the West would cut emmissions, and India and China are set to expand and far outweigh any cuts the Western world makes. I don't understand why they don't want to add in the emerging industrial countries, especially when it's going to be easiest for them to get on the right path now than to wait and have to retrofit everthing like we are going to have to.

Canned food and bottled water is ok but a few months ago I bought a bunch of MRE's and water packs. Both are rated to last until 2010 as long as they are kept in moderate tempurature and not 90 - 100 full time.

I figure its enough for two people for two weeks or so. Never know when it may come in handy.

Yes, man has altered the climate to an extent, but
he alone is not the sole reason for global warming.

It does look like rita has a little more fury behind her.
Does anyone know houston's elevation? Also, I saw that
there is another storm brewing in the Atlantic. It is out
at sea and NOAA is predicting that it won't make landfall.

Well supposedly it will only hit as a 3 or 4, which still sucks. But again, when are the meteorologists EVER right??? You guys will probably get a foot of snow or something down there :P

I'm glad we never have tropical cyclone's come all the way up the east coast towards Long Island.. I saw a website that showed the majority of the South shore would be under water, right up to where my house is. But a major hurricane has not hit the Northeast in over half a century, so we are due for one... The NOAA also predicted a major East Coast hurricane making landfall, but it has not happened yet. We still have two months to go, who knows what will happen.
