I also use newegg and zipzoomfly. Several times there were cheaper options listed on pricegrabber but I spent the extra few dollars instead. I like their reputation. I've never come close to being disappointed by either of them.

If you're primarily playing games then AMD is the way to go. I don't say that because Im an AMD Fanboy, as I currently have both Intel and AMD computers. If you do go with AMD I recommend the 939 chip over the 940 chip.
Here is a link comparing the two chip types:

I have not read this article.
I would recommend you go with the AMD 64 X2 3800+, socket 939. Cost for the chip is in the $320 - $330 range. I don't overclock, but from the reviews I've read it seems to be an excellent chip for overclocking easily. The X2 chips cost about the same as the non-X2 chips, so why not go dual core? For single core CPUs I like the FX chips, but I think they are overpriced. If you want a good fast single core chip and can afford it.. buy an FX-55. (FX-57 costs about $1000)
As I understand it, the higher up the X2 scale you go, the less overclocking potential you have. (i.e. 4800+ = worst overclocker).
About the motherboards:
What type video card do you have? AGP or PCI-E? It doesn't sound like you plan to upgrade your video card, just your CPU, MB and RAM. I've always liked ASUS myself, but some boards may have more/better features or are faster.
Here is an awesome ASUS board. Pricey but very nice.
http://www.anandtech.com/mb/showdoc.aspx?i=2589 Board cost about $220.
Here is a good board that has both AGP and PCI-E. Manufactured by ASRock (a subsidary of ASUS). Other websites have not posted good reviews on this board.
http://www.anandtech.com/mb/showdoc.aspx?i=2524 Board costs about $75.
As with most motherboards, read several websites before making any final decisions.
One other thing, I used to use Pricewatch (http://www.pricewatch.com), but I found the vendors to be of lower quality and when prices were low the shipping was high. I tend to use Price Grabber now (http://www.pricegrabber.com) Tthe vendors seem to be higher quality and you can easily see what the tax/shipping handling will be to compare with other vendors.
My 2 cents.

I'm sure if you looked you could find MORE expensive vendors. I didn't say they were the MOST expensive. I said they were MORE expensive.
When I build a PC $20 to $50 dollar markup PER PART is way too much.
I have never had a problem using other vendor's customer support or in returning defective parts or any problems at all.
So you've been indoctrinated into the NewEgg philosophy and you feel better because you pay more for your parts than other people do for theirs. That's great. Just say so.
Well thanks for letting me know my opinion was crap from the start there, it made the rest of your post much easier to read. See that is the nice thing about ad hominem attacks, I don't really have to respect your opinion afterwards, sort of like not respecting your mom in the morning.
After 3 machine builds in the last 4 years from them, not a single part has ever HAD to be replaced. Then again your milage may vary.
I do almost all of my pricing off of pricewatch and I rarely see newegg's prices out of whack with other vendors. They usually have a better selection of new and older parts. Again, your milage may vary.
Then again they pay me a bajillion dollars a year to waste my time touting them on message boards. Their online reputation not being up to snuff and all.

Your reading skills are lacking. Read each of my posts again as each time you responded to something I did not say. State your opinions as we all must but don't tell me I'm saying stuff I didn't.
