How many of you file share?

Off topic, but don't go too far overboard - after all, we are watching...heh.

Do you regularly share files on networks like Kazaa, Shareware, Emule, Edonkey etc,.?

I'm not scared of getting caught at all. They've caught what? 200 people out of the millions using it. Sorry, but that's not going to scare me enough of saving $$:D

File Sharing is too prone to viruses and such. I use newsgroups and IRC to get all of my stuff. Kazaa/Morphious/Napster just add WAY too much spyware/adware to your machine.

"W32.Kwbot.P.Worm is a worm that attempts to spread through file-sharing networks, such as KaZaA, iMesh, LimeWire, eDonkey2000, and Morpheus. It has Backdoor capabilities that allow a hacker to control a computer by using Internet Relay Chat (IRC). The existence of the file mscommand.exe is an indication of a possible infection."

I could be wrong, but I think that if you're in the US, you can disable the sharing of the files on your computer and you should be ok. Then you just download off of people who are not in the US where it is not illegal to share. Like I said, I could be wrong.

Actually, that's not the case. Whether you're actively sharing or not, you're still downloading stuff you don't really own, so in effect, you're in possession of property (in this case, intellectual property) to which you have no claim. I'm sure you've heard the MPAA and RIAA calling that "stealing." So, it doesn't really matter if you're not sharing - you're still technically violating the law. It's just much harder (well, impossible really) for anyone to catch you.

As for you Canadians among us, AFAIK, you're pretty much exempt from any lawsuits from the RIAA. Canada took the unique (and great, IMHO) approach of, rather than strictly cracking down on copying, they instead levied a fee (of about $.05) on each blank CD-R and -RW sold to pay off the recording industry. Because of that fee placed on blank media like that, Canadians are free to make what the Copyright Board calls "private copying" - that is, pretty much unlimited copying of any music for personal use. See here for more info.

thats a good idea the canadiens have, but high selling records aren't produced by them as much as are record producers do, so that might not work here

I dont know if there in US has been making the same but Blanck CD prices increased 20 - 50 % here to give "this" money to the Discography Industry to hold " their money loses" because of piracy"

You have all been issued subpoenas for copyright infridgement. Please bring in all computer equipment you own and $50.00 for court costs.

I download with IRC & Direct Connect & of course most DC hubs force you to share, so I generally share when I am on DC.

My issue with the record company's is the way they format and sell me the music. In my life I have several favorite albums I have bought several times over in different formats. So my first issue is the change of formats. It forces me to purchase the same item again.

My second point is the quality of these formats. I have had records, tapes and cd's that have all either broken or been scratched. Doesn't anyone feel the media could be slightly tougher? Especially in today's world with the tech we have.

So I would like to ask the RIAA how many times they would like me to purchase the same fking record over and over and over again. I should pay for the right to listen to an album ONCE. From there on in I have paid my royalties to the artists and the companies.

I have over 2000 files; 20gb of music, vids and movies. I've reached deep enough into my pocket over the years for the same damn item. Power to the people and their wallets.

On a side note. They busted a guy at a flea market up the street for being in possession of over 4500 DVD's and having them for sale. Some of these were movies that are currently showing in the theatres. He was reported to a hotline and two uniformed officers and a PI for the movie industry made the bust.

These are the fools they should get, not a 12 year old girl. The RIAA recently sent a batch of legal warnings out to file sharing users. One of those users was a 12 year old girl. The picture of the letter is in Maximum PC.

The companies are going to need to understand that the times have changed. They are going to have to meet the needs of the consumers that have been gouged for years, buying the same damn thing over and over again.

Until they figure that out they'll go nowhere.

Here's the real kicker as explaing by the RIAA and Federal Governemtn.

It is NOT illegal to download the software. If you either have owned in part or whole that software before you are legally obliged to obtain another copy of it by any means.

If you are OFFERING the software to anyone else (letting people take software from your mazhine or "sharing" on Kazaa etc) then you are in the wrong.
