I believe that the question really was what is the best distro for a newbie and that would be Mandrake. As far as free distros goes. Lindows would be the most user friendly in the for sale only versions. 80% of those on LUGs and even the top distro developers and several from the Debian dev team say that for first time users Mandrake is better to learn on than REDHACK as far as if you are going to do a HD install

i used Mandrake for a while, but decided Linux wasn't worth all the time I'd have to spend to get things working properly, so I stopped using it. perhaps I'll give it a try again one of these days, I've still got the discs for mandrake 9.0, I think it was called.

Hmm...FreeBSD anyone? Really I like linux and all but *BSD has done much more right by me. However I do use Fedora at work since its pretty easy and not too hard on the eyes. It also has a a decent setup. I however would consider debian far better for anything serious linux wise. (Fedora is fun to mess around with...) We use AIX exclusively for our Bank's Transaction Server so I'd have to go with that for hard core apps...anyhow I'm digressing!

Redhat (RIP) recognized hardware and installed drivers better compared to Mandrake, but the latest Mandrake 9.2 does quite well. I know purists like cmd line (good to learn), but GUI is the future of Linux if it ever expects to gain market share among the masses.
I didn't think too much of Lindows. By the time you buy the OS, join the "club" and get all the "free" programs, you could buy XP Pro, which imo defeats the whole purpose of Linux.
Maybe Fedora will make headway in the near future. For now, I took the easy way out and am sticking with Mandrake for general use.
