Of course, Xenius, $1 invested in searching for oil has a pretty reliable return, but a $1 invested in alternative energy research does not. So it makes sense for us to spend more of our money looking for oil than figuring out what to do without it.
I think the market will eventually drive us into alternative energy... it is already becoming more difficult to find new sources, and even with technology reducing the price of extraction, eventually oil prices will go up. Some have said that's why Saudi Arabia is cutting production, because recent studies have shown they don't have as much easily available left.
There will be some tough times when this happens, but our society adopts change so fast, that I think you'lll find once it makes economic sense to use alternative energy sources, it will happen rather quickly.
