Off topic, but don't go too far overboard - after all, we are watching...heh.

I think, unfortunately, Apple has a bad reputation among Windows users. I looked at it as a joke for years (and OS 8 and 9 were justifiably worthy of ridicule) but OS X changes all that.

I've been recommending Macs to my more well-heeled clients and they're loving it. They get style, function and a shelter from the Spyware,/Hijacking/Virus of the Minute madness that is Windows.

I still think I can get more done, and faster, with a Windows machine but for the masses I think this is Apple's opportunity to tear a chunk of flesh from Microsoft's lumpy ass.

now is the time to do it, Microsoft is at their weakest legally, they couldn't fight back full force with all these anti-trust suits still up in the air.

I would think that Microsoft had enough business and legal acumen not to let much of their market share go. Some maybe, but not alot.

I'm surprised at this percentage. With the SEC and anti-trust laws around, how could he obtain 50% of the shares from Apple?

I don't think it is quite 50%. If he owned 51% he would be told he can't do it. But something like 49% isn't a majority share. :)

No, Bill Gates cannot hold anywhere close to 50% of the shares of a major competitor. If he did hold 49%, it would be too easy for him to buy more shares to obtain 50% (and thus gain majority control of one of his main rivals).

Here are the biggest shareholders for Apple:

Yeah, top institutional and insider, but since when is Bill Gates an institution? :P

Anyways, I do know he holds quite a bit of Apple, and that he makes money off apple as well.

As smart as YOU might think YOU are with PCs, the majority of end-users out there simply are not, and they are not interested in actually learning exactly how PCs work, hence the need for simpler, more secure OSes like OS X.

The real computer geeks still have LINUX/UNIX...and to some extent other users will still have Windows. No-one is forcing you to use something you think is beneath you.

But when you're in the business I'm in, supporting the endless cycle of broken Windows machines you tend to yearn for simplicity and security.

Microsoft has simply dropped the ball in this department, despite how smart you think you are.

Lord Zog, I am so with you on this!
I have my Bachelors in Comp Sci, so it's not like I am not capable of solving my problems with Linux, it's just that I don't want to. I don't consider this to be a lazy or ignorant attitude as some people contend.
I see computers as appliances, tools to help people do their job (or have fun), not devices to foster learning in computer science. I don't know how the automatic transmission in my car works, and I don't want to know, I just want to turn the key and drive! I admire Apple for their whole hearted pursuit of this concept.

Anyone who holds over one percent of the outsanding shares of a publicly traded company is legally considered an insider.

IMO Mac's aren't much more secure than Windows. That's really up to the person using it.

I don't like Apple. Their computers make me feel like an idiot because everything is geared towards the lazy, 'I don't want to do anything, I want the machine to do it' mentality. Plus, the ones I've worked with aren't that much more stable than Windows XP either.

But in the end it all comes to the user. Sure there are many different types of operating systems, but in the hands of an experience and open-minded user they can be more powerful than any other OS on the market.

Man, where do I start with what Evan said?

Does your car make you feel like an idiot when you jump in it and go somewhere?

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, and if you're knowledgable enough you can use Windows with little or no problems, but the bottom line is we're talking about appliances for the masses.

85% of the market haven't a clue what they're doing. They want to read their e-mail, look things up on the Internet, look at their digital photos and play games.

With MacIntosh PCs there seems to be very little in the way of people/entities trying to hawk their wares with every click of the button.

This is probably due more to the fact that MacIntosh PCs aren't as an attractive a target for hackers, but in my books, and in my line of business that's good enough reason for me to offer my clients an alternative they seem all-to-happy to accept.

I understand and agree with you 100%. Our society doesn't like to learn or advance their skills, let alone get off their lazy asses and accomplish something. When we do though, everyone is out to get that person (ie. Bill Gates, Google founders).
