I don't know if anyone even watched the videos I posted on happiness but in Denmark almost everyone uses a bicycle as their main source of transportation. Despite having the money to buy a nice car they don't see the need or purpose.

Honestly, everyone on this thread needs a nice dose of South Park. The episode on environment friendly cars is quite funny and has a good message. Just because you own a 4 cyclinder or hybrid car doesn't mean you should be so smug about it and feel you are better because you don't own a gas guzzling car. And those that own gas guzzling cars should at least try and become more aware about their environment.

Regardless if global warming is real or not, oil is a non-renewable resource and we need to move away from it before it runs out. If we don't find an alternative renewable resource for fuel we will be left with piles of crap that no longer have any purpose. I don't think oil will run out in my lifetime or even the next 500 years but it will run out eventually in future generations. And you have to admit that the exhaust expelled by all oil run machinery is not healthy for us. I think a lot of man made things have caused more cases of cancer in society.

Zog, I liked your post and take on this. I think it's really going to be interesting to see where America stands as a world power in the next ten years. Although China has a good shot at becoming number 1, I think Japan has an equal shot because of their advances in technology. Even if America is not the number 1 in world power if we collapse so too will all other economies and nations. The Fed recently stepped in during the Bear Stearns crash and focred JP Morgan to purchase Bear Stearns strictly because of the hit our economy would have seen if Bear Stearns crashed, nationally and globally. I'd really like to know how many at Bear Stearns saw this coming. They knew how much they had invested in mortgage backed assets but those turned into huge liabalities as the housing market crashed. This is a company that survived the great depression which shows how serious a risk many of our top investment banks are facing that invested in these markets and face spill-over from these markets.

Oil companies suck. Normal markets and prices are typically controlled through the theory of supply and demand but I really don't think oil companies think this applies to them. Even if we use less (hybrid cars, car pooling, bikes, transit, etc) the prices will stay the same. They know that their oil will run out eventually so they are looking to make as much as possible off it while it's available. Once it's gone they have nothing. They're kinda stupid too if you ask me. If they know it will run out why don't they themselves invest in alternative fuels before others do and become the rich money hungry bastards. Oil companies have the money, power, and resources to invest in alternative fuels but they'd rather squeeze out every dollar on what they have now. And those that argue that oil is a renewable resource I believe you are wrong. Our population growth accompanied with consumption is greater than what is available and will be available in the future.
