LOL, I saw an energy report (sponsored by Exxon) that said Ethanol cost more energy to produce per gallon, than that gallon would deliver. I read it a little closer, and they were counting the energy from the Sun in the equation.
LOL, not a problem unless the Sun starts sending us an energy bill!

They can't screw you if you opt out of the system; like I said, buy a bike. It doesn't cost anything for fuel.
Live too far from work to take a bike? That's a simple solution - relocate closer to work.

Public transportation should not be left out of the puzzle. It should definitely be part of any comprehensive plan of alternative fuel sources. GM did the United States a great (criminal) disservice by dismantling most of the public light railways that existed in order to sell more GM motors.
I do happen to live in a city, Boston, which has transportation that I've used countless times in my life. At the moment, I usually drive but I can ride my bike or go back to public transportation if I need too. My Eclipse gets 30mpg at least. Sometimes more and I really don't drive it that much.

Public Transport is good, and we need to expand it. It will never be like it is in Europe though, America is spread out, we're not as densely populated as, say, Germany. Still, every major city and it's suburbs should have complete coverage by public transport. Some people in govt are bitching about the subsidies to Amtrak/Accel in the NYC to Washington corridor. They bring up the old "If it's viable, why do we need to subsidize it?" routine, and completely ignore the fact that those subsidies would be dwarfed by the cost of expanding the highways to handle all the extra auto traffic if they were to cancel Amtrak/Accel.
There's often more than one cost associated with transportation, not just the upfront visible ones.

Yep, even without resorting to things as high tech as hybrids, we can do a lot to help ourselves. I get $33 MPG, and this crunch isn't hurting me that much. Get the average SUV to at least 25MPG, get more people into cars instead of SUVs, and that would give us short term relief instantly. Not only would people be using less gas, thus spending less, but as demand goes down, so does the price of oil. It's a double whammy on the amount you spend at the pump.

Over here in Puerto Rico the price for gas is 63-68 cents per liter for regular, about a month ago, the truck drivers that deliver gas to the gas stations wne on strike all over the island and man it was a mess for a couple days there were huge lines at the gas stations luckily for me i had enough gas to get by for about a week and i knew the strike couldn't last that long with out some kind of intervention. I heard there was even 1 death due to fighting over gas. No gas is a huge pain in the ass...

this is why I'm glad I bought a diesel. I can run it on just about anything that burns. Bio-diesel is starting to make some headway in parts of the country. The best part is it's a renewable resource, based from soy and canola oils. shit, I can run it on WVO (Waste Vegtable Oil...basically fryer oil) if I so desire.
I agree that things need to change. Hybrids are starting to gain popularity and that's a good start. Though, I think the easiest thing to do would be for manufacturers to offer more diesel engines in their line-up. They're more fuel effiecient than gassers, it's cheaper to produce diesel, and overall, they're actually cleaner than their gas counterparts.

Could be the way to go. Whatever problems/barriers exist for diesel to be as standard are probably easier and more cheaply overcome than perhaps hydrogen. Biodiesel could be a HUGE piece of the puzzle.

Years ago wasn't diesel way cheaper than gas? I remember because back in the day, i used to deliver furniture. Me and my partner drove this 16' Iveco box truck that was diesel. Every morning we would fill it up. Now it seems diesel is just as much or almost as much as gas?? Are they just trying to scam people?

thanks to Spirit of Me for the sig!
I laugh at people with those huge SUVs.

Unfortunately, huge gas prices drive the price of everything up; clothes, food, services.
