Belguim may be a wonderful country with great people and fine food and a beautiful countryside. The plain fact is simple, they are opposed to our current situation in the gulf along with germany and france. I am german and dutch, though my ancestry has little to do with the fact that we are Americans and these former allies benifited from our protection for many years at a great expense to the American people (yes, you and I and our parents and grandparents). I do not wish any ill will to anyone, but what france, germany and belgium has done with this maniac and the current problems in iraq, is complete garbage and a bunch of crap.

It is their choice what position to take and they took it. The balance of power in something that any educated or heck uneducated person can understand. This is about a shift of power in the world today as much as iraq. There is no ussr anymore, therefore the european nations feel secure in the EU. There is a post about who has give what as far as arms and technology to iraq, and I bet you would not be surprised to discover the countries that oppose our obligation to the iraqi people for freedom are the largest suppliers. It is the duty of the President of the United States to provide security and safety to the American people. Belgium opposes that and therefore it is hard to be simpathetic toward your heritage in belgium or mine in germany or my wifes in france. We are Americans and this is our country. Sorry but that is the way I feel. I have purchased many products from both germany and belgium in the past (france after that incident with the loss of american pilots and the lybian nuclear reactor, won a boycott from that day on from me! anyhow!) It may not do much to effect there economies, but in time it does not help.

I have great respect for your conviction/patriotism toward belgium, and perhaps in time things will change, they usually do. Today at this moment they are NOT our friends and surely the UN vote with regard to turkey is more than enough to demonstrate that fact.

Countries are made up of people and everyone has an opinion or point of view. Not all iraqis are crazy idiots with weapons of mass destruction. Hitler had enemies, they tried to kill him, not all Germans were nazis. The same with belgium and the people. A bunch of guys that play RTCW are belgium and great guys, but it does not change the face of the current iraqi crisis, mabe makes it tougher because we thought many of these countries were our allies and sometimes reality is a slap in the face.
I buy whatever I can that is American and I drive American. Fine, wonderful, and powerful luxury vehicles that are under $40,000 and as nice $60,000 german cars and no need to mention french cars--- Le Car LOL POS LOL

We're not entirely opposed, we also agree that something must be done about Saddam, but we first take the diplomatic path. When however this path is a dead end, we would support the US and their military machine. We just dont like the way things go right now: ending the discussion and grabbing the weapons. America has one of the largest armies around, and that gives them a large responsability NOT just to grab those weapons too soon, but to stay on the diplomatic path as long as possible.

Another thing: You say that the US feels the threat coming from Saddam, and you also say the the EU feel secure because the USSR isnt there anymore. Now do you really think we feel secure, knowing that we live a lot more closer to Iraq then the US? Or are you saying Iraq would only threaten the US and not the EU. That would mean there is a reason Iraq wants your skin. You can say they threaten the US because the US is the symbol of freedom and democracy, but in fact the EU is as much a symbol of freedom and democracy as the US is, so thats not really an argument. So what else could have pissed of Saddam? Think about it.

12 years Floppy, 12 years this guy has been shoving it in the faces of the UN.

Why dont you criticize the French for paying millions to Saddam, or Germany.

We do take our power responsibly, if we didnt, Belgium would be our favorite vacation spot. All the waffels we could eat.

We are by far the richest nation in the world, if things get fucked up here, the rest of the world suffers.

We are defending ourselves, we dont need anybody to tell us we cant, its in our constitution. The same document that our President swore to defend, regardless of what a bunch of fence sitters think.

We are bouncing this same dicussion all over the forums:D

When Germany was building up its military, did they attack anyone. No, they waited till they were ready and we saw what happened when they became ready.

Now are we to sit back when Saddam is ready and willing to give his WMD to any terrorist group to use on one of our cities. No

The world has changed for the USA and everyone else. Most dont want to see it becuase it sucks, I hate this shit but things have to be stopped before they get started. Maybe when Brussels gets attacked you can see the things we do.

Floppy,
you stated:
"America has one of the largest armies around" not true

http://www.cdi.org/products/almanac0102.pdf page 19

you stated:
"We're not entirely opposed, we also agree that something must be done about Saddam, but we first take the diplomatic path." -and do you think it is something that should be dealt with in this or the next decade after your neighbors fully rearm the madman?

you stated:
"but to stay on the diplomatic path as long as possible."
-and twelve years could not possibly be enough time.

I stated:
that "There is no ussr anymore, therefore the european nations feel secure in the EU." Meaning that I feel that many european countries that we committed to protect thru our NATO alliance for MANY years have said PISS OFF America when we needed some help.

You know I was going to download all kinds of links, articles, ect... and you know what it does not matter. We will do whatever is necessary to safeguard our own country. That is reality. We will do what is in our best interest. It is very common knowledge that the leaders of france and iraq are old friends. Enough stated there. They will do what is in their best interest as will belgium and all countries.

Sadam can leave and go to france and live a wonderful life, or he may end up in jail with noriega (pres of panama) or he may end up in another country or dead. Makes no difference to me. We did not need france to beat germany, and I feel that this whole crisis was a good thing for the American people. We know who are our true allies and who are fair weather friends. We do though buy a lot of stuff and it may be a real good idea for some countries to look at possible expansion into other markets. Have you seen any of the US polls (almost 50% of the US population wants to boycott all french products - 230 million divided by 2= a lot of consumers) That is free choice. sadam has his and about 45 hours to decide!!!!!! And I bet we will defeat iraq without france or turkey or belgium or china.............

edit: correctly stated"favor a boycott of french goods"

Whats wrong with my statement? America has one of the largest armies around. China currently has the largest army(in troop numbers). And if you say " but we have more tanks, helis n' stuff" , then just take a look at your "defeated" enemy Russia.
