A Canadian "Saving Private Ryan" ???
they don't mention Rawanda or Kosovo either...but that doesn't mean that there isn't still unjustice there...
The media doesn't report it because it does not bother the US right now. That is the bottome line...
If someone from South Africa, Kosovo, Rawanda, etc... does something to the US, they would take interest....otherwise, they are too insular. Just IMO...

If Disney became involved with the funding, maybe it could turn it into a part war , part romantic comedy staring Hugh Grant and Elizabeth Hurley.
BTW, has anybody here seen "Das Boot"? (not on topic but ya know.. )
Oh great, here we go again... Why isn't always the bloody Americans that are like the main characters in any story about World War II?? I'm getting sick of it... And why do they always cast pretty boy big names like Cruise or Pitt ? Look at LOTR, bunch of unknown names and they made a kick ass cast , and just because they're unknown they did not win any best actor or best actress awards...

Rat Patrol was hilarious.
I am pissed with BF42 because it doesn't have jeep mounted MG's that can take out panzers.
Tommy the reason South Africa was so big in the news was only because of Apartheid. There is a mysticism in America around Racism and thats why it was reported so much.
Reverse racism is evidently ok and they don't feel the need to report that. Winnie siezing property, kicking out white citizens and promoting genocide of whites just isn't as newsworthy here in the US as whites practicing racism was. Funny how certain things are wrong depending on who is doing it isn't it?
And all of us here have heard about the atrocities that occurred in Rawanda. We were all justifiably curious as to why the UN didn't feel the need to do anything about it. Could it be because there was no profit in it?
We still have troops in Kosovo. I personally know two active service members from my VFW club that are serving over there.
Now back on topic.
Rommel vs Montgomery would be cool but would they portray them correctly without offending everyone? Rommel was a genius, everyone pretty much agrees on that, but the information surrounding Montgomery ranges from arrogant idiot to military genius and everything in between. I don't think you could do a film with him in it without starting all kinds of controversy.
They could make Patton as offensive as they wanted because he was a coarse arrogant man and everyone knew it. Montgomery's potrayal would be sure to piss some Britons off no matter how you portrayed him.
Although I don't believe any of us here are from Eastern Europe I would love to see a movie done about Kursk. Arguably the greatest tank battle of all time and the scale and brutality would be daunting.

i saw k19: the widowmaker last night... have to say what a piece of shit film. I like star wars and all so im thinking that Liam Neeson and Harrison Ford should have stuck to their respective galactic roles...
They had a great idea for the film, but it was just sooo bad. Only russian sub movie i liked was The Hunt For Red October. Any movie dealings w/ soviets and communists i find extremely appealing... very ironic since i had a russian g/f who basically ran right over me. (not literally)
In that regard i thought Enemy at the Gates was super-awesome.
On a further note, there was a television show called "The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles" which basically followed Indiana Jones as a 8 year old boy and i think a 16-18 yr old kid. The 18 yr old kid ends up in WWI as a soldier in the Belgian army. The story lines were pretty good, Yes, i know it wasn't a Band of Brothers type quality but it did jog a lot of people's memories that some germans were assholes before they became Nazi assholes.
This also is what leads me to perspective. I don't think there would be a politically correct movie filmed from the German WWII point of view. What are they going to film? Reports of the massive amounts of Jews they killed and how everything was a personal victory in that regard? Now since the world was different 100 years ago, i think an effective film could be shot from the German point of view of WWI...
But moving forward 30 years to WWII i think anyone affiliated w/ the axis just assume learn from the experience, take the chops that the whole world (and us Americans) who continuesly talk about how bad the Nazis were, give them.
ok, im done.

I dont think of Liv Tyler, Ian Mcellen (SP) and Elijah Wood as unknowns... John Rhys-Davies is very popular in England too. He was Sallah in the Indiana Jones movies for crying out loud.
The Academy i think frowns down on singling out actors who are part of an ensemble cast. Why do you think it wone 11 or so Oscars? They gave The Return Of The King its due respect. And i admit that the whole LOTR trilogy surpases any movie trilogy as the best ever made.
Name one pretty boy thats in Saving Private Ryan... unless you have some weird Tom Hanks fetish.... I know Matt Damon was in it of course but he was not a main character... he was a supplimental character who showed up at the end... the objective if you will.
Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt of course would be awful selection for war movies... Thats why any respective "Hollywood" WWII movie such as the thin red line or Saving Private Ryan did not cast afore mentioned actors in the cast. Damon was probably cast because he did look very young and fit the role well, the youngest of four brothers...
And not all of us are bloody... some of us are cool

Ok, then Monty vs Rommel vs Patton...in any order.
One of my uncles was under Patton, did the 90 day without a break fighting. He had his share of booty. Yeah they hated Patton, but they won battles. I doubt they'd have liked him any better if he went soft and lost battles. My uncle was a big man, built like and strong as a bull. The Army had to special fit his clothes and shoes (size 16). His nickname was Rip (I knew him as Uncle Rip) because he was always ripping his clothes, not Rest in Peace.
BTW, I didn't appreciate your expacks in the graveyard last night.

Ok nobody said anything about Das Boot so I'm assuming most haven't seen it. (or just ignored me
)
Das Boot is a German flick that follows a german U-boat crew during WWII. It's a very long movie with lots of breaks in the action, but that makes it all the more sweeter because you become heavily involved with the emotions and struggles of the crew. It's a nice change of pace to see the perspective of the war from the German U-boat crew's eyes. If you haven't seen this film then I highly recommend it. Released in 1981 and directed by Wolfgang Peterson.
Agent-C, yeah man it does suck . It's all about the mula and trying to relate to a wider audience.
Thank goodness for the history channel though.

Why must we all live under this umbrella of the Forboding Nazi? I'm English... lost relatives in both of the past World Wars. Have served myself. On the ground level, you're a grunt doing what you're told.
Do you know how often I questioned my section commands orders? Every time in my head--the first few times vocally. I cleaned some really big boats with a hand scrubber then shined an immense brass bell with a small rag. I stood at attention for long stretches on hot black tarmac while my fellows, who didn't question orders, lounged under shade drinking iced pops.
The soldier in the field doesn't have a lot of choice. Whether he be Albanian, Czech, Canadian, German.... he just follows orders to engage the 'enemy'. Or get shot yourself by your own side. Not a lot of choice. So if you're a German grunt or a German squad, or a German troop, or a German battalion... you follow orders. You're not a mass killer of innocent people, you're a grunt fighting one battle at a time, trying to keep yourself alive and your sanity intact.
Anyone ever see the German movie Iron Cross? Depicts a squad of about 14 German guys who get stuck behind Russian lines and try to work their way back... fighting not only the Russians but also jealous German Commandants. Good flick.
Das Boot is a good flick. The 81 version is better than the original only in special affects. The original, if you can put up with the grainy black-and-white view is very well done too.
Rommel vs Montgomery would be a great war-flick. Would need to include the Ultra work with the 3 and 4 wheel Enigma machines which helped the Allies torpedo much of the critically needed supplies Rommel was requesting. Arguably, if that code hadn't been broken and those ships delivered even half of what was needed, Rommel would have stood a good chance at holding Montgomery at Tuninsia.
Didn't someone try a movie regarding the Kursk tank battles? Thought I read something about that a short time ago... perhaps something is in the works.
A movie about Fidel Castro would be awesome. Too much American propaganda surrounding the issue for me to try and wade through, but suffice to say that anyone who, with a handful of guerilla fighters (call them terrorists or freedom-fighters your choice) takes over a country from the mighty grip of Russia itself is worth a good movie.

Perhaps you cared to enlighten us as to why you don't like us Canadians? I really want to hear what you have to say against Canadians...heh...
CrazyBri, yeah definitely, anytime I see a pretty boy in a movie, I basically shudder and say outloud in the theatres "What the hell were they thinking?"
Saving Private Ryan, now see, Tom Hanks has balls, he's not regarded as hot or anything so therefore his ego isn't that big unlike Cruise or the Pitt. He also produced the movie, as well as co-produced Band of Brothers, he wanted it to be as authentic as possible, same with Saving Private Ryan.
Look at Pearl Harbor, what did the lead characters do in that movie? They got sent to boot camp, for 4 days or so, that's it... What the hell they sent them there for beats me as the roles Harnett and Afleck played hardly requires them to attend boot camp, they did not even get down and dirty like Hanks and the boys did... What the hell they sent Alec Baldwin to boot camp for? He was only in like 3-4 scenes with very little lines!!! They did not even get directly involved in making of the movie! I could go on all day..hehe
