Andy Rooney has been having a fun time for a long time. I like him, I find him funny even when I do not agree with him.
Someone you may like is Lewis Black, a stand up comic. Very, very, very funny man.

One google search was all it took to check this.
This site proposes an actual source.
There is a serious danger in believing mass emails. It is relatively harmless when one idiot loses a thousand dollars to Nigeria. It is much more dangerous when ideas (no matter how true or funny) are attributed to people who did not say them. It is most dangerous when these emails contain supposed facts upon which people base their decisions.
It is a symptom of a society that is far to gullible. You must always be skeptical of everything you read, and see how many sources you can find to back it up. Even then, much becomes "truth" just through multiplication. (For example, when one tabloid announced that the Pakistanis had captured Bin Laden, and numerous international papers ran with it. -- that one caught me until I read more carefully.)
The surest sign in this case is, it doesn't sound at all like something Andy Rooney would say

Yeah, that text looked a bit fishy to me.
"Well, we're not just gonna let you walk out of here."
"Who's we sucka!?"
"Smith and Wesson and me."

I have to agree with whoever said this too. Some things tick me off like people hating Bill Gates or anyone else for how much money they have....Originally posted by Heart Collector
I don't care who said it, I agree with him.

On the topic of Bill Gates wealth, here's a website that provides an interesting perspective. Tip: you have to click the zoom out button on the top right of the page.
Yeah, I know, it's a socialist web site, but it's still an amusing way of looking at statistics. (It's also very thought-provoking.)

I know you've already disclaimed responsibility for the site, Pudrik, but I see a few things wrong with it. I don't have the figures in front of me, but I dispute the assertion that Bill Gates had $50 billion in income in any one year. First, I don't think the value of his stock ever went up that much in one year. Second, even if it had, that is not a measure of income but of wealth. And of course Bill Gates has lost billions on paper in other years too, but that wouldn't make a lot of sense for this site to report.

I dont care how much bill has, he has earned it. Honestly I dont think anyone could ever spend 50 billion... I do also think he should donate more of it...
But shouldn't he have to pay for breaking the law? He and Microsoft really did break the law.
It is easy to say make your own OS, or internet browser. Many have, much better than Microsoft's products, too. The OS was a choice a user made, however the internet browser wasn't if you bought Windows.
The antitrust suit against Microsoft is very interesting, and a worthy read. Did you know in '95 Microsoft actually agreed not to bundle any of it's software with it's operating systems, you would have to buy them seperately or as a package deal.
Microsoft then decided IE was a feature of the OS, not a product of all of it's own, therefor it could be bundled with Windows and no other internet browser needed to be bundled with it.
Flaw: IE is available for other operating systems(Mac). If it is a feature of the Window's OS, then it can not be a program for other OS's. This is where Gates got caught with his pants down.
Here is the kicker, and where he deserves to lose money(besides just breaking the law above). You know when you have a fresh install of Windows. You go to your favorites in IE and there are a few there, like Real Player. Ever wonder why? Well guess what? Those companies paid money to be there. It had nothing to do with 'integration' into the OS, or a feature of the OS, it was simply that the #1 selling OS in the world would only have 1 internet browser, and that internet browser was raking in a good chunk of change because of paid advertisements in it.
Not only that, but Microsoft threatens PC makers of losing their Window's license if they pre-install Netscape on their PCs.
Antitrust at it's most ruthless.
Yes, Bill Gates and Microsoft deserves any and all fines leveled onto them. He does nto deserve to lose money because he is rich, but he sure as hell does for breaking the law.
Wiggum you raise a very good counter-point. I think the author chose the $50 billion number because it was the most dramatic. (Like most people trying to make a point, he wasn't content with sticking to solid facts.)
He does, however, admit to the inaccuracy of data when it comes to how much income the very wealthy have, including a link to this article, written by another author.
The problem is one I have come across in my own reading... most income statistics cut-off at $300K or $1M, which is really only upper middle class. (I know a few millionaires, they work 9 to 5 jobs in middle-management or as professional business owners (ie orthodontist).) Nowadays a million is not that much.
The shape of the curve does not change by cutting off the very end--the majority of human wealth is concentrated in the hands of very few. At least in America you can go from the middle to the top, if you're a bright guy and a ruthless businessman.
But hey, these are the guys who are going to spend the money to take space vacations... now where do I sign to be a janitor on their space hotel?
