Visit Freecycle. It's basically a network of people who, instead of throwing away stuff they don't want or need, opt instead to give it away to whomever wants to come pick it up.

For example, I saw messages from folks in the DC area advertising an Ethan Allen armoire, a couple of computer desks, beds, futons, mattresses, and even a 1985 Honda motorcycle. And all for free.

So, if you like free stuff, you might like to check this out. :)
