Those minimum or recommended specs? I find minimum specs are usually meaningless and recommended might run a game with medium settings. You usually need much more than recommneded specs to run with high detail.

It was tested to run on a GF3. You'll be just fine (more than fine). It will run fine on a 9600 1.5ghz machine.

You have more than enough memory (much more) and plenty of power to run doom3.

Here are the required specs:

Todd Hollenshead, id's chief executive, said Doom 3 will require:

• A 1.5-gigahertz Intel Pentium 4 chip or AMD Athlon 1500.
• 384 megabytes of memory.
• Two gigabytes of hard drive space.
• An nVidia GeForce 3 graphics card or better; or an ATI Technologies 8500 or better.

but with a 9800 you should be able to run a higher setting than that without a problem. If you want the best performance of coarse you'll want to get the fastest processor and best video card. But why spend upwards of $800 just to play doom3 on the highest setting and get better framerates than anybody else? :P

You'll be able to run it on higher res ect than what those minimum specs are set for. Your processor and video card are both much better than the required specs, not to mention having 1gig memory is more than you need for anything atm.

Your 9800 is just fine. Different cards run different games better.
