August 04, 2004 - Back in 2002, BioWare released Neverwinter Nights, one of the most anticipated PC RPG projects in the history of the genre. Still glowing from the success of the first two Baldur's Gate titles, Neverwinter Nights, along with an epic single-player campaign, offered gamers the chance to build and run their own campaigns. Using Dungeons & Dragons 3rd Edition rules and shipping with the powerful Aurora Toolset for game building, Neverwinter quickly gained a sizeable fan base, and user-created content for the game is still actively appearing.

Today, Atari and BioWare announce what most of us have been waiting to hear: Neverwinter Nights 2 is officially in development and scheduled for release in 2006.

We'll say right now that most details of the sequel are still under wraps. Nothing has yet been released on what the game will look like, play like, or what story it will tell. We do have one tasty bit of concept art for you to scrutinize, however. Even better, IGN will bring you exclusive first details of Neverwinter Nights 2 this Friday.

Until then, however, we can mention that development duties for Neverwinter Nights 2 have been handed to Obsidian Entertainment, the respected developer already handling Knights of the Old Republic II, the sequel to BioWare's excellent Star Wars RPG. Obsidian is headed by Feargus Urquhart, who once served as President of Black Isle Studios, the company responsible for the Icewind Dale and Planescape: Torrent franchises, and publisher of the original two Baldur's Gate titles on the PC.

BioWare will still be involved, however. The company will offer assets from the original Neverwinter Nights, as well as offer suggestions and oversight of the sequel's general design and development.

"From our development of Baldur's Gate and Neverwinter Nights to our engine licensure on Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2, we've been working collaboratively with Feargus and other members of the Obsidian Entertainment team for years," said Dr. Greg Zeschuk, BioWare's Joint CEO.

"Neverwinter Nights remains one of the most important titles BioWare has ever created. We certainly plan to remain involved in the production and development of Neverwinter Nights 2 and we're delighted to initiate another partnership with Obsidian Entertainment and Atari," added BioWare Joint CEO Dr. Ray Muzyka.

Want to know more? Of course you do. Be sure to check back with us on Friday for a bunch of exclusive Neverwinter Nights 2 info.
