This is going to sound like a stupid question, but i have a coupon for a free half life 2 copy, when i purchased a ati 9600 se, this spring. I am eligible for this, but i was just wondering, how long will it take till the game is actually released? Has any one ever used this type of thing b4, if so, tell the pro's and con's.

Thanks

Now, back to the post....

I used Steam before (beta tester actually). I was wondering is it advisable for the HL2 playing or should we just use the in-game stuff??

Opinions?? Thoughts???

Half Life 2 Preload means those who are eligible (coupon holders and other stuff I don't know), can download the HL2 content. You cannot play HL2 until it arives, however, becuase it is encrypted and only available when the game is released. When it is released, you will be able to activate it.

Since this is all steam-based, I'm assuming the encryption and anti-activation protection will be very complex.

I am getting the pre-load right now, i did not have to enter any actvation code as of yet, because, it is just a pre load. I am assuming we will have the enter the hl2 active key, when the final part of it is released/ has gone gold/ or hits store shelve's. Thanks for the info, it has been helpful, and just visited the forums over at steampowerd and got a feel for it.

Is it just me, or are people going to be trying to crack this like mad, i read of all that anon-hl2 release, stolen code, blah, blah, blah blah, and was aware of that around the same time it happened.

Just posting to kill some time.

With the Half-life 2 preload will you get exactly what you will get if you bought it at a store, except without a CD?

And if I decide to uninstall steam after I have activated Half-life 2 will the game no longer work?

From megagames.com

News that Valve plans to ship release candidates to Vivendi Universal on September 15 has further fueled speculation that Half-Life 2 may not be released until November 2004.
The expected delay will come as a shock to fans of the game, already disappointed by the many delays to the original September 30, 2003 release date.

Some speculation on a possible September 30, 2004 release now seems very optimistic and unlikely considering Valve will not give a straight answer on the release, choosing to place the ball in Vivendi's court by stating We're currently planning to send release candidates to Vivendi by September 15th, however, VUG hasn't given us a ship date yet. Might be best for you to ask them directly.

It would seem, however, unlikely that a publisher could provide a release date before trying out the release candidates. So we are left slightly confused as to who is actually responsible for deciding that elusive date.

Vivendi has, of course, refused to comment on H-L 2, so we have a strange situation where a game, we are told, is about to release but no one wants to risk giving a precise date. Meanwhile, Steam PCs have already received 2 GBs of Half-Life 2 even though Valve is not sure of when the finished product may be ready.

While all the insiders claim ignorance regarding H-L 2s release, a recent report by Wedbush Morgan claims that November's Vivendi-Universal release Half-Life 2... will sell over 1 million units worldwide. This isn't the first time we've said this about Half - Life 2 but go figure.
