Damned Spyware!!

Postby cavalierlwt » Wed Sep 22, 2004 12:31 am

I recently re-Ghosted my machine, brought it up to date with SP2,etc. E
verything was fine and dandy. I hopped on Kazaa lite, dl'd a little porn (as I do from time to time). I go to play a clip using the standard Windows Media player and boom! I see that two programs are now installing themselves on my computer, No clicking on nothing by yours truly, they were just off and running. I tried killing the processes before they could finish, but it was too late. I have run ad-aware 5 times, this spyware just keeps coming back, basic variety crap: pop ups. I generally don't have a problem with spyware, usually have no problem keeping it off my computer, usually have no problem removing it from friends and families computer.
No big deal, I am re-ghosting it tonight and I am going to go back to using SuSe linux for all my websurfing, P2P, and porn needs, and just keep a Windows partition for my gaming needs.
But man, oh man, am I pissed. I really wished the 'owners' of the spyware had a local office. I fantasize about walking in, dressed like potential business client, pulling out a crowbar and just smashing their computers to sh*t right in front of them. I can't believe this isn't illegal (the spyware, not my crowbar antics that is)!! And nice job Microsoft, I know I had my security settings decently high, along with their damned firewall, great job with SP2!!
Maybe I can do some research on this spyware, find out about the company that produces it. Maybe people should start publishing the names and addresses of people who make spyware.
Just had to vent a little, I'm just so pissed about it.

It's because of the porn!

"I hopped on Kazaa lite, dl'd a little porn (as I do from time to time). "

I still find it hard to believe you just go on from "time to time".
 ;)

Try getting Spybot or some other spyware removal programs to aid you. Also...getting the name of the evil spyware program helps.

P.S.-When ranting, add a  smilie! It just makes it more fun that way. :)

kazaa lite is without all the spyware. it's the normal kazaa people should avoid.

I've been using kazaalite for a year now, and my computer is nice and spy-ware free :D

its not so much the spyware in the actual program but the things that you are d/l'ing. they are just as dangerous maybe more than the spyware/adware that is in the actual program.

The virus was actually embedded in the porn clip. While playing the porn clip,it launched IE, which I think launched the two spyware programs,

cavalierlwt, i don't know what type of spyware you have but
some of them (browser hijacks) adaware and spybot
can't get rid of. try this if your browser has been hijacked.

http://www.spychecker.com/program/hijackthis.html
it's a powerful program read cardfully before using.
i have used this program to remove many hijackers from
my wifes and kids computers.
good luck

Use the program and post the log at http://www.thatcomputerguy.us forums and they will analyze it for you and tell you how to correct the action.

I had one machine where I worked that had the Windows Media Player .EXE replaced with a spyware downloader. When you tried to play a media file, or when a web page tried to access WMP to launch a clip, it would install the crap. I'm going to start a new thread on how to remove spyware.
