Star Wars Trilogy dvd review... mine!
For anyone who bought the trilogy and watched some of it:
My take so far: I've watched half of a new hope. Sound is fantastic. It looks badass too. Way better than the "original" specail edition.
The video improvements that i like: Blaster shots look better, death star is more detailed, got rid of that ugly ass blur under Luke's landspeeder. Did i mention that it looks really good? Color's are sharp and crisp. Tatootine doesn't look so bright anymore, looks more like episodes 1 and 2, more earth tones i suppose you could say.
The video improvements that i hate:
That whole rediculous scene with Jabba still looks like ass. Yeah, Jabba actually looks like Jabba from ROTJ but when han walks around him, it looks worse than before. slight warping and of Han when he walks around and steps on Jabba's tail. Jabba also looks more 3d than Han Solo does. In this case i think they over did it.
Also, the scene where Jabba meets Greedo in the cantina. I think they reduced the time inbetween blaster shots where Han kills Greedo. BUT, Greedo STILL fires first. I wish they would have made it more reactionary, like he squeezes the trigger after getting shot. It'd make Han look more of a badass by not flinching.
The "improved" lightsabers.... they said they made the blades look more like episodes 1,2 and 3 but i didn't see a major difference.
The audio is much better, they enhanced a lot of the sounds especially when they do vehicle driveby's like a Sandcrawler.
The menu looks good, exactly like the menu's on Episodes 1 and 2. For some reason, i was skeptical about that thought they would fuck it up.
They also offer new audio-commentaries with cast and crew. I'm a big fan of those, so im interested to watch the movies w/ the commentaries on. However, i wish they would've done more a LOTR's type where they have multiple commentaries... one w/ writers and directors, other with post-production crews and a whole seperate Cast commentary. Nothing pisses me off when you just get done listening to a good anecdote from one of the cast and then some dude gets super-fucking boring with a overtly detailed thing they did.
Thats all i have to say and i only got to the part when Luke and crew leave tatooine and out run the star destoyers.
More to come.

Yeah, I picked up the Holy Trilogy myself tonight, plus the last book in Stephen King's Gunslinger series.

I am not a big fan of commentaries myself. Depends on the film, most times I prefer my own take on a thing thatn the directors, I like to keep the magic intact...

Can someone please tell me what the big deal with this is? All of the star wars geeks at work are going nuts over this and I frankly don't get. That said, I have not watched my copy of it it, but I don't understand why there is so much uproar over who shoots first, etc...
This is uber-geek if you ask me, but what the hell do I know?
I just bought the set to relive my childhood again!!

I do not care about about the Jabba scene, but the shoot first scene is dumb. Han was supposed to be a hard ass smuggler, a rouge, who becomes a rebel leader. By editing that scene, they ruin what he was.

When they put the scene back in for the special edition release on VHS, it looked ok... it wasn't spectacular but CG obviously has come a long way since those dark ages. "MY" biggest complaint is that IMO it looks worse now than it did on the VHS release.
I'd just assume they leave the whole scene out. For the sake of continuity i suppose they put it back in since Jabba made his appearence in Episode 1. Maybe its a little refresher for the people who "forget" what Jabba looks like.

Just saw something that pissed me off on Episode 4. If you have the movies check out the scene right after they escape the death star and are being attacked by the 4 tie fighters. About 50% of the fly-bys by the tie fighters look horrible. If someone notices something weird about this scene on their DVD let me know.
It looks like they went over all the stars and background except for a square around the tie fighters. It looks more brown than black or just not as dark as the background... its really hard to explain but it is extremely noticeable.

This is because it is old footage.

Empire of Dreams was on A&E a few times. It was a good documentary. From the sound of what everyone is saying the "Re-Mastered" version of the DVD sounds like complete shit. But...I know why they did it. So the can release another Re-Mastered version of the DVD in about 4 years and get more money.

Ok, it is not done with computers. They use a model of the ship, film that ship, then place it on the star background. The blocks around the ship is the area that was filmed around the original model that is then placed on the star backdrop.
They have always been there, it is not new to this edition of the trilogy.
Can you sleep easily now?
