The cpu you had BEFORE bf1942/rtcw
I had a Gateway 2000 pc.
233mhz, 128RAM, voodoo2 gfx card, Ensoniq sound card.
Was great for DOD, CS, and HL.
------------------------------------------------------
It may be hard to believe but I had an even CRAPPIER pc before that one.
It was an Acer with 33mhz processor, 4 MB of ram.

P4 1.6a @ 2.4. 9700Pro 512 Muskin DDR ram.
Upgraded the CPU to a P4 2.4c @ 3.3, motherboard to the ic7 and ram to 1 gig of dual channel DDR, 9700Pro is still playing games smooth as can be. Only thing I can see upgrading is the video card, but I am waiting to see how sell HL2 runs before deciding.
I used to have to have the newest, faster video card/CPU/motherboard etc the second it was available. Then I realized as long as your current gear runs it fine, you really do not notice the difference in performance boost.
