I've always liked Empire Earth and Ceaser III or IV (whichever the newest one is).

Rome Total War. RTS and turn based in one. Also the best strat game I have ever played, topping the Civ series.

I recommend Rise of Nations. I think Best Buy has it on sale for $10 + $10 for the expansion. (Sale might be over and is only available online).

I'm pissed at Best Buy right now.. they wouldn't sell me the expansion for $10 at the local store EVEN THOUGH I SHOWED IT TO THEM ON THEIR OWN WEBSITE!! They said "we match competitors's prices, but not our own." Is that stupid or what??

SO... I went to CIRCUIT CITY and they were happy enought to pricematch + 10%, so I bought the expansion of $8. You can't beat that.

That being said, Rise of Nations is a cross between Civilization and RTS. I really enjoy it.

Is it easy to learn? Can you play together with someone else on a LAN?

Reason I am asking is that my GF really likes RTS games like Warcraft ( for example ) that we can play together, Nice thing about Warcraft is that we only need one copy to play together on a LAN too.

I strongly recommend Rome Total War.

If you've played RTS games before you'll have little trouble learning how to play. I was a little intimidated at first but within a few hours of playing, I was commanding my army with ease. The tutorial is very helpful in getting you started.

I have yet to play multiplayer but there is an option to play LAN battles. My friend picked this game up yesterday and were gonna try out the multiplayer mode tonight.

It is good but like Sandstorm said Rome-Total war is by far the best RTS game I have played. The battles are real time and the campaign map is turn based.

Yes, I get out. :P I kinda cheated on the list though...I had a little help.

Anyways...I think Rome:Total War is WAY to hard and comprehensive. If you want a strategic game that doesn't take a genius to play, get Rise of Nations (and expansion). It's a good balance between fun and strategy. With Rome, all you practically do is strategize.

You can download the demo and try Rome:Total War. You can't play the empire side of things, but you can get the feel of combat. I don't own the game, but I have played the demo.
