Pirates! gone gold

Atari and Firaxis have announced that Sid Meier's Pirates! has gone gold and is on target for a U.S. in-store date of November 22nd.

In Pirates! you take the leading role of a Pirate Captain in the 17th century Caribbean trying to become the most revered and feared pirate in history - exploring high seas and exotic ports, overtaking enemies in fierce naval battles, engaging in duels and attempting to seize valuable booty. The new Pirates! carries on with the great gameplay and design simplicity tradition of the award-winning original while adding more challenging and exciting battle options, and a deeper and more varied role-playing experience. In addition, an entirely new game engine delivers updated gameplay, stunning new features, spectacular 3D graphics and enhanced surround sound.

A pre-order program is currently under way allowing consumers that reserve a copy of the game to receive a special Limited Edition for the same price. The Limited Edition is packed with tons of bonus material including the original Pirates! game, the full behind the scenes making-of video, developer diaries, unique exclusive content and bonus material.

Yep - I've been waiting forever for this too. I've still got my old PCjr version laying around somewhere, and remember quite well also playing it on the Commodore 64. I can't say why, but it was incredibly addicting, and I'm sure it will be again.

Ahhh the memories of Pirates! :D Will definatley be getting this when it comes out. Since Meier is behind it, I have a feeling the remake will be pretty good :) If anybody wants to play the original Pirates, an Apple II version can be played via an online emulator here.

Required: Internet Explorer. I don't think it works with anything else.

Jey, I still have the original of that map under the glass on my desk (and under the many piles of paper)! It's been there almost 20 years...

Ah, the good ole days when graphics were bad (compared to now) but gameplay was GREAT!

Pirates don't NEED money. Just plunder the store.

Tommy, it's called gameplay, which is a hell of a lot more important than graphics.

It won't let me play. Says I need Windows with IE5 or higher. I have Win XP with IE6 :(

I got the same thing to Chacal. Just rrefresh and it should work. It did for me until I got pwned in the first sword fight, so I quit.

How embarassing! Pirate Tommy gets it handed to him!

Tommy, if I remember correctly, this strategy worked fine for me:

Sword: Cutlass. ALWAYS Cutlass. You're almost guanteed a win.

Retreat. High swing. Move foward, low swing, high swing. Repeat. If anybody want a different version besides the Apple II version (such as PC, C-64, NES, and others I can't think of now) LMK via a PM.

Chacal, if the refresh trick doesn't work try this: http://www.virtualapple.com/ or this: http://portune.net/cgi-bin/gs/gs
