Do you guys know any good free AV and firewall software?

I have been using norton a long time, but my subscription ran out a couple months ago, and I had ot reinstal windows, and an old copy of norton AV/firewall 2003 (without any updates) woulnd't give me much protection I think.

Ok, that takes care of the AV. Now about a firewall?

I don't want to have to use the Microsoft firewall for very long. But it cuts the slack until I can get anouther.

Bah, AVG is no good. It has like a 70% virus detect rate. I downloaded Kapersky(shareware), and am very pleased. Free, too.. /small print if you crack it.

For a firewall, I use Zone alarm.

I use Zone Alarm without too much trouble...just have to make it remember your answers.

Here is what I use:

adwareSE for spyware
Windowwasher for clearing
zonealarm for firewall
Cwshredder for trojan and highjacks

It seems to be working well so far. Also backup daily. Defrag daily, update daily.

trendmicro has an online (free) scanning tool which is alright.

all the above are free....like it was meant to be...ehehehe

The best solution is not to browse the Internet like a blind mongoloid with a "Kick-me" sign on your forehead.

Seriously, my machines are all clean because I'm not stupid. I know where not to go, what not to click on and what not to install. The odd occasion I do get duped, AVG and common sense help warn me and clean things up (either manually or with the help of some software like HiJackThis or CWShredder).

I've had some client's PCs where it was SO bad I seriosuly thought of recommending they never use a computer again in their lives. I mean, how gullible can you be?

I've only had one major run in with a virus. I downloaded some porn. Went to play the clip in Media Player and it just installed two programs, no 'do you want to install xyz' ,nothing. I just happened to notice that there were two buttons on my toolbar that were showing two programs getting loaded. Oh well, that's why they make 'Ghost'. I was p1ssed off though.

Yeah, a girl I know, and her uncle and mother use the same computer, had so much crap on it, got rid of nearly all of it (only 80 infections as compared to 800). It is probably back up to 800 by now.
