2,200 killed in tidal wave

Postby cavalierlwt » Sun Dec 26, 2004 5:24 am

Holy Sh*t,
It's scary how 'casually' (to us anyway) the people in India and Asia get killed on a yearly basis. This is pretty big news for them, but it's not like 9/11 was to us. This kind of thing happens to them from time to time.
Damn, 2000+ killed, just like that.

edit: make that 3000+ people.
By the time it's over, I bet it goes over 5000.

make that 5,000+ now.
It just hit out the blue I guess.

>>People that were snorkeling were dragged along the coral and washed up on the beach, and people that were sunbathing got washed into the sea," said Simon Clark, 29, a photographer from London vacationing on Ngai island.

In the Andaman Sea on Phi Phi island — where "The Beach" starring Leonardo DiCaprio was filmed — 200 bungalows at two resorts were swept out to sea.

The worst known death toll so far was in Sri Lanka, where a million people were displaced from wrecked villages. Some 20,000 soldiers were deployed in relief and rescue and to help police maintain law and order. Military spokesman Brig. Daya Ratnayake said 2,425 people were dead in areas under government control. <<

10,000 and counting.
What really pisses me off right now, is that the major news stations are business as usual, they are treating it like a minor story. They should be fixated right now, instead they are running a show about the history of Saddam Hussein, another one is running 'people in the news' etc.
Its a pretty bad message being sent about how life is valued.

Not to be morbid.. but are there any videos of the tidal wave? You never see those except on computer animations. You think with more people having access to personal video cameras we would get to see one.

Mother nature at her greatest fury...

Our condolences to our brethren in Southeast Asia... It is tragic that it happened around this time of year, the one occasion that everyone around the world can share in.
