Weird Computer Happenings

Postby Mr. Slayer » Sat Jul 02, 2005 4:24 pm

Ok. I was basically playing BFV all night last night, and everything was running fine. This morning I play a few more rounds of BFV and my computer was causing some lag. So I figured I would just re-format. I did and it went fine. I was in the process of installing drivers when I rested my elbow on the machine and it stung the crap out of me! I soon found out that in several different spots on my machine, there was live current! I knew this had to be a bad thing so I stopped the driver installs and disassembled my entire machine (mobo and all) to see if any wires or anything was transferring current in onto my case. There was nothing. So I put everything back together and the current is still there. I got on the internet and was writing a post much like this to post on here, and then the screen went nuts. I believe it is my video card that shorted out but I'm not sure.

As of now my PC is out of commision. I think the mobo is fine along with the Harddrive, CD-rom, and Floppy drives. I think i need to replace both my video card and my case (power supply too)

I have absoulutly no idea how this could have happened. My comp has been sitting unused in my cousin's basement for about a month now and was covered in trashbags to keep dust out. The case I had was an Antec Lanboy. The only thing I can think of is that something happened to the power supply and caused it to short out some things. (Which is very strange because Antec's products are normally very dependable)

Besides that I'm stumped.....:freak: Has anyone else ever seen anything like this??

Very odd, as the case is typically used as the ground, instead of left neutral. And as soon as any live current made contact the circuit breaker in the power supply should have tripped or as a last resort the fuse in it should have blown. Was it your monitor? its possible it was sending current down the shielding of the monitor cable, the possibilies are endless as to where the current could have orginiated from, but the fact the system was up and running with this stray power around is frankly, amazing..

have tried another power supply? maybe borrow one from a friend. they're easy and quick to change out, seems like the best place to start. if not there maybe the wires at the front of the case could have joggled loose somehow. idk, good luck :)

I don't want to sound like a wise ass, but you reformatted your entire machine simply because you had lag?

Isn't that like buying a new car because the old one was out of gas?

With a windows system, its good to format - reinstall every 6months to a year.

Helps clear out old drivers etc that you may have forgotten about.

You need to check for open/crossed conductors, an open ground, or a loose conductor causing voltage spikes/drops. In a properly working system, what you are experiencing can not happen.

hardware lag prolly, where you move and 5 seconds it finally renders it.
