What's your speed?

Off topic, but don't go too far overboard - after all, we are watching...heh.

How fast are you?

What's your speed?

Postby Spirit of Me » Thu Aug 11, 2005 9:52 pm

Hey folks,

My home town is finishing a fiber project that will provide 100 megabit lines to residents.

I was wondering; how many others out there have this kind of service?

The only fiber I'll be seeing is in my Metamucil. But seriously, I think it's like 5Mb, when it wants to behave.

6 Mbits down, but only 384Kbits up. I am fine with the DL, I wish they would bump the UL to at least 1Mbit. I have Comcast cable in NH.

Note: I just found out, I can pay an extra $10 to go from 6Mbit down/384Kbit up
to 8Mbit down/786Kbit op

Damn them, I don't need that last two Mbits down, I need that damn 768Kbits up. There's no way I'll go from $42/month to $52/month just to get that upload speed.

hahahaha I probably have the slowest connection of half you guys;

1376 down
131 up

It does good for games though. My ping is usually in the 40's...like all the time actually haha. Im probably moving this year or next, so if the house I move to is eligable for dsl I hope it is a little closer to the verizon center thing...not sure of the name.

I don't think I would notice a difference between 6Mbit and 8Mbits download speed, most servers won't push even 3 Mbits to you on their best day. The only thing to gain is going from 384 Kbits to 768 Kbits. I waste money at the drop of a hat, but if something bothers me value-wise, I just can't bring myeslf to do it. It's like TIVO, I won't buy one because they want a monthly subscription fee, or a couple hundred bucks up fronts. It pisses me off, I won't do it. Instead I've spent more than that setting up my old pc as a 'mediaPC'.
It makes no sense, but it's the way I do things. Maybe I'll breakdown and upgrade with Comcast, but I doubt it. I'll probably wait for them to come aournd and upgrade that upload speed on their own.

Have you checked? Unplug your cable modems power, wait a minute, and plug it back in.
I'm in NH and I have it already, think I got it about a month ago. I might be wrong though, I used a broadband speed test and it indicated about 6Mbits, but I'm running it now and getting 3 Mbits. There's a lot of factors that can affect it.
