Where are all the reports of 911 working? How many people owe their lives to it. Is is a system based on human descion. It will never be perfect. But we are by far better with it then without it.

Yeah it seems a little ungrateful to focus on the miniscule percentage of times it actually goes wrong. That call didn't sound that bad, think about the number of times they will get a call like that and it will turn out to be a nighbour misreading the situation.
Not to mention the idiots doing prank callas and the stupid people phoning 911 because McDonalds won't give them their money back. They do the best they can.

Typical American mentality to point out the negative and never the positive. This mindset unfortunately transends not only 911 calls, but also occurs in the workplace.
I applaude those that are 911 agents, because that has got to be a very stressful job, and they are helping everytime they answer that call.
Thanks to you all!

I was reading an article the other day where the 999 operator (uk's version of 911) talked a 10 year old through giving cpr to his father who'd had a heart attack. Between them they kept him alive for 15 minutes untill the ambulance survived. As far as the lady involved was concerned that was a pretty normal everyday occurance.
Doesn't matter what kind of call it is. You can't tell me there isn't enough police to go and check. Give me a break. Not all cops are busy at the same moment to not go check. If it's more than 1 call from more than 1 person they should of went to see. If it turned out to be nothing it was only 20 minutes if that out of that cops time. No excuse.

Number of 911 calls daily in the us = 500,000
Number of police officers in the US = 663,535
Seeing as how that number includes all police in all branches and not just active patrol units which actually make up a fairly small percentage of the total I think it's safe to assume they haven't got the man power to go to every call made. If you want to blame someone in that situation blame the fucking neighbour who saw the guy drag the girl into the house but was too fucking lazy to call 911 him/herself.
It's no good blaming the police because they wanted a first hand witness before they acted. It's not an unreasonable request imo. All you have here, from the call centre perspective, is what sounds like a minor squabble coupled with some really flimsy sounding stuff about him dragging her into the house. No-one mentions a gun or gunshots and as 'the neighbour' in question hadn't bothered to call the police themselves they's have to assume the even the dragging was much less dramatic than it sounded. Ok so this proved to be horribly wrong but there was nothing there that really looked like a particularly dangerous situation.
It's terrible and tragic but blaming the police isn't helpful in any way.

Is there 663,535 crimes going on all at once that every cop is in use? No. Again..no excuse. Every call is to be taken seriously no matter what. We pay our taxes which in term pay the police. Every call is serious until otherwise checked and found not to be..period. Again..more than 1 person called and that 2nd call should of sent a cop out to see what was going on. If it wasn't a mistake on the police they would not be changing the way they responde to 2nd and 3rd party calls.

Every should deffinently be taken seriosely because you never knew if for sure someone is pranking or not...and I really don't think there is that many people that prank call since it makes a fire squade and the police come to wherever you do it at and then you are f***ed....
Anyways I once heard or read or something about how this 911 telisponder answered a distress call from some like 10 year old about how someone was in his house or how his mom or dad was hurt or something bad and the 911 person just blew the kid off because he was just so normal sounding and under control...and so the lady hung up on the kid and his parents ended up dieing or something bad happeneing in result because help didnt arrive...so anyways the telisponder was sent to prison for like 10 years for not taking the kid seriousely, which to me is a well deserved 10 years...Atleast I know I couldn't live with myself if I did something like that and it ended up ruining someones life like that...
I guess you just have to live with the 911 service screwing up every once in a while...I'm sure that your chances of your 911 call failing are very slim...although we all wish the chances were 0 to 100000000 which there not...
Kinda like Parrot said I think or someone else...We should not totally look at the negative of 1 911 call messing up when we can think somewhat for possitively and remember that the 911 call has saved many many lives its just not perfect...
Kinda like in the movie the hills have eyes where the people are in the middle of the desert and they can't get cell phone service when there plan covers over 97% of the united states and they are in the 3% ...stuff happenes I guess...
Sorry If this comes out insultfully I'm incredibly tired and have no idea why I am up at 2:15AM and on my computer of all things when I should be sleeping...

Lunatic...
If this was your Mom,Sister or Daughter you'd be pretty pissed someone screwed up. You'd wanna know why and you'd want answers right here and now. You make excuses for 911 not being perfect and I understand nothing or nobody is, but if it came down to you or a family member needing the service, you would hope to god they were perfect and did their jobs right. It's not the negativity of 1 call either. This happens all the damn time and way to much. Do you think they'd be changing the way they respond to 2nd and 3rd party calls if this was a 1 time mistake? No. No excuse, this is something that needs to be 100% right or lives are lost.

And the winner is..........
Dispatcher: 9-1-1
Caller: Yeah, I'm having trouble breathing. I'm all out of breath.
Darn....I think I'm going to pass out.
Dispatcher: Sir, where are you calling from?
Caller: I'm at a pay phone. North and Foster.
Dispatcher: Sir, an ambulance is on the way. Are you an asthmatic?
Caller: No
Dispatcher: What were you doing before you started having trouble
breathing?
Caller: Running from the Police.
Yeah you are right. They should take all calls as seriously as each other
I'm sticking with the fact that that neighbour should have called the police themselves. If there is someone to blame for what happened beyond the sad sick fuck with the gun then it's them. Of course blaming anyone other than the gunman is pretty silly anyway though...
