Power Supplies. Lets talk.

Postby [ecgn] btt » Sat Sep 16, 2006 9:11 am

So, can anyone help me. I am gonna get a new one. But I don't want to get the wrong one. I have a Dell 4600. One CD drive, one A drive, one Hard drive, Inte p4 2.8 gh 300mhz chip, One Geforce 6600gt 128mb. I am most worried that I will get one that doesnt fit my case. Has anyone put a new power supply in a Dell? I would like to keep the price under $75.

Here is a link to Newegg and the power supplies they have. So many to choose from where do I start?

Here are some of the names I trust:

1. Enermax
2. Thermaltake
3. Coolmax
4. Antec

I personally have Enermax and Thermaltake PSU's. Enermax is just good anyway you cut em. Thermaltakes are pretty good too, I personally run a gaming rig with one, and also Ferret upgraded from a Socket A to a Socket 939 and we managed to get his 420 watt Thermaltake PSU to work just fine with it. As to the Coolmax, I personally haven't used one yet, but my parents comp that they have has a coolmax PSU in it and it has ran flawlessly for nearly 5 or 6 years now. Antecs run good as well. Mostly it boils down to how much wattage you need and how stable you would like your volatges to be,

Check the efficiency rating... if it is listed below 70% then I would advise against it.

Hopefully dell has a standard ATX power supply mounting area, if not then your f'ed and need to contact dell if you are looking for a specialized to fit PSU.

Not to sure about the 4600 case config, but i had a Dimension 8200 whos 275w PS crapped out after 5 yrs of non-stop use.

Keep in mind that anything Dell is made to there specs and im 99% sure you will have to cut a bit of the screening around the vent to allow for the switch on the new PS.

I went with a Antec TPZ-480w

Not that big a deal if your handy, and a small price to pay if you want your machine for a couple more yrs

Now its your turn to be Dellified.
