Sony PS3 Buyers Beware!

OK, I know that every gamer is supposed to have the newest and greatest hardware to play their games. I think that some that will be taking them home tomorrow just may be up for a little surprise when they hook that brand new $500-$600 Playstation 3 machine up to their current TV. Here is an article that I just found on IGN/PS3:

PS3 downscales to 480p

While Sony has been constantly bragging about the fact that 1080p is the only "true HD" resolution, there's some bad news for PS3 fans: if you don't have a 720p-capable television screen, the console will downscale the game resolution to 480p instead of upscaling it to 1080i

As it turns out, gamers who own older HD sets that feature only 480i, 480p, and 1080i resolution input capabilities will have to settle for the display quality being downsized as the game boots in its 480p mode rather than upscaling the image from its more desirable 720p mode to the TV's 1080i. We tested this development on older HDTV sets with games designed for 720p but not 1080i -- Resistance: Fall of Man, NHL 2K7, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 07, and Need for Speed Carbon. Sure enough, the system downshifted all four titles to 480p rather than moving up to 1080i.

And for the Microsoft fans: the Xbox360 does upscale to 1080i.

I am buying one. I am not going to stand in line or pay a premium but once I can walk into best buy and get it I will.

I decided to come back and add in this disclaimer: I could change my mind if there are tons of launch issues and complaints.

i see the draw, consoles are less maintenance, easier to take to someone's house etc.....

The main reason I like to have a console is for when friends come over. I really dont like anyone touching my PC and for sure done like them to play games on it under my name. I just wont allow any multiplayer by another person. There is also something to be said about playing racing games on a 62" wide screen. I dont even want to know the hours I spent playing GT3 and GT4. My wife had a weekend business trip the weekend i got GT4 and at the same time but the steering wheel / gas and break pedal. I think I may have slept about 8 hours that weekend.
