The main plot portion of the game is a typical "interstellar mystery" that your character gets caught up in. Basically solve various mysteries through space combat or exploration.

But that's just the tip of the iceberg. You can explore the game universe, charting different sectors, discovering derilect ships, chanving upon secret jump-portals, encountering maurading bands of pirates, etc, etc. But to go even further, you can be a pirate if you choose, or other profession such as mercenary, commodities trader, explorer, etc, etc. Take jobs catching space scum, or become the scum itself. Purchase vast amounts of goods and plot the best trip through the space lanes to sell your cargo for maximum profit. Purchase and upgrade ships, cargo vessels, and outfit them with all manner of shields, weapons, and technical accoutrements.

And once you're done with that, go online in multiplayer and blast your buddies, team up with them and hunt pirates, or start a profitable cargo hauling business.

Welcome to Sirius Sector; it's at your fingertips!

You get a full story mission, and when your done with that, you have full run of the Liberty sector for combat, trade, or exploration.

You can get more info at the official site:
http://www.microsoft.com/games/freelancer/default.asp

Or at Lancer's Reactor, the best Starlancer/Freelancer fansite around:

Basically yeah. Of course since it's the demo you won't have access to the best weapons and ships, but it gives you a good taste of what to expect in the full game.

Yeah, I got it from MS's site. Everything ran fine.

And don't worry about all the questions, I love helping out a fellow gamer get into a cool game.

EB Games website lists it for $49.99, and you could probably find it way cheaper on eBay.

Hmm, I'm not sure about that. I only played a small bit of the demo since I knew I was probably going to get the game, I just wanted to confirm it didn't completely suck(which is doesn't).

I did get the game last week, and it's been a blast to play. I've probably got 25 hours under my belt so far and I'm still disovering stuff every time I play, and I'm only about 1/6 of the way through the game.

If you liked the demo at all, I highly recommend you pick up the fill version. Even if the error you described happens to you with the full version, you can always exchange it.

Now if only anyone was actually playing multiplayer......
