You can replace the sensor bar for the Wii with anything that emits InfraRed light.

There is a sensor bar that comes with the Wii that emits infrared light so as the Wiimote, the controller, can determine it's position relative to the TV — the sensor bar is in front of the TV — this clip shows that you can replace the sensorbar with anything that emits infrared light.
