new rig

Postby RCglider » Sun Dec 03, 2006 9:55 pm

I've got the video card, now it's time for mobo/cpu.

The Core 2 Duo E6300 looks inviting, but from what I can tell the 775 mobo's are plagued with problems and some won't even work with it. It seems it can be a frustrating experience if you don't know which mobo to get that works.

This would be the first Intel system I've had since 1998. Don't talk me into a E6600; not gonna do it.

So you guys running a C2D, what mobo are you using and what if any stability issues have you run into? What mobo seems to be the best bang for the buck that works?

Yep, I'm cheap and make them last (OC, cooling etc.), but it's time to retire the ole reliable XP2800/9700 Pro.

If it looks like too much of a hassle and expense (which has always been my gripe with Intel setups), I'll save the bucks and stick with a higher end A64 and reuse the DDR Ram, which would still be fine for gaming.

TIA

I'm not brand loyal and up until recently, Intel was not worth fussing with as AMD was plain just a better value. The E6300 is more than adequate, and at $180 is a better value for the performance gain over a similar priced X2 AMD.

Same for video cards. I bought a ATI X1950Pro for $200, was going for nVidia this time around and would have if ATI didn't release that one. It's got everything needed including VIVO which is nice.

Buli, what mobo are you using? The E6600 is just more than I want to spend for a gaming machine. The only thing holding me back is needing to buy new RAM.....expensive right now. I have Kingston HyperX PC3500 which could be used in a 939 AMD.

After looking at prices for PC's, if I wasn't going to reuse most of the hardware, it's better off to just buy a complete new one and upgrade the video card! I like building my own but pricing them out there's such a big difference these days.

Have you considered ASRock? They are a subsidiary of ASUS. I have two ASRock MBs now and both are good, cheap boards. I haven't had any trouble with either. I don't think they are greath overclockers, but I don't overclock. You can't beat the price. I think I paid $60 - $75 for each board. I'm currently running an AMD X2 4800+ and AMD 3700+ both with 2 Gb of RAM.

That being said... I bought them due to budget constraints. If money wasn't an option I would have bought something different, probably ASUS. Not that they are bad boards, just that I like to buy the (fastest/feature rich) MB I can afford.

I don't have a C2D (yet), so your mileage may vary.
