cat5e to wall outlet HELP!

Iran a cat5e cable through a couple walls and now I am trying to wire it to an outlet that has two jacks, one for phone, one for computer.
The computer one has 8 wire attachment locations, but the colors do not match the cat5e cable. the ones that match are: brown, blue, orange, green(solids) others on ethe wall outlet are black white yellow, and red. Which of the remaining wires go with these colors???

I'm not sure what you mean. You're wiring Cat5 and you are stuck trying to connect 2 different cables? You have the wall terminated, or you should.. Why not use a pre-made cable to go from pc to wall? Unfortunately companies make cables that deviate from standard colors. Believe me I've spent many many hours in dimly lit datacenters cursing because the shades can be so subtle and hard to distinguish sometimes.

If you're making the cable yourself, just designate the colors as stand ins and complete it. The colors make no difference as long as you are consistant and cable it correctly on both ends.

The answer as to how to cable it is, in general is the wall interior as straight through and if you have to use a crossover you use pc to wall for that.

Stupid question, but I'll ask it anyway. You did run two lines to that outlet, right? By reading your post, I'm kinda under the impression that you're trying to connect the CAT5 to both jacks. (correct me if I'm mistaken)

As for the wiring diagram, PA has pretty much got you covered. As long as you are consistent in your wiring, it really doesn't matter where the wires go.

lol Foxtrot, I am replacing a single phone jack that was already ran to the wall location with a dual plate of phone and Cat5e, so I have phone and cat5e - two different wires.

Allah, I know that it doesn't really matter if I know that the wires match up correctly on both ends, but I would like to think about a different person working on my items in the future and not cursing the high heavens b/c I did it "My" way. Also the other end of the cat5e wire already had a connector on it so it goes directly into the router.

Lastly, thanks for the assistance, I saw a few diagrams similar to that one with numbering the pins and associate wires to them. I just didn't want to go through the trouble of finding out where the wire terminates inside of the plastic housing.

The wall outlet that I bought has a female cat5e jack that has wires already on the connector, they are about an inch - to 1-1/2 long, and terminate onto screws. My job is to terminate all the wires from a cat5e wire onto the correct screws. I guess I will be counting pins and finding out which wires terminate on those pins to complete the job.

Yeah well, there aren't any shortcuts. It isn't that difficult. Make a simple diagram like you see in my shortcut. Substitute your colors for those and then just stick to the diagram. You can do it, smacker!

Does the cat5e wall jack manufacturer have a website to reference the pinout?. By now I would have pitched the wall jack and bought something in a leviton or something else standard that the punches were right on the jack with the proper color codes for 568B. Lowes and Home Depot has jacks like this in stock.

Got 8 Lan Jacks in my basement for the LAN party that will never happen.

Nitpick: technically, for cat5E, you can't use just any wire in the cable. The 4 pairs are twisted differently, and the standard pinout has been chosen to minimize interference. It does make a difference in the quality of the signal.

digital phone have 8 wires?

Phone jack has 6 wires, computer has 8.

Most digital phone jacks are 8 pin and the same size as a standard RJ-45, some may also have an odd tab on the side, I forget which brand is the one with tab. You would mostly see these on systems that have a PBX. You would see the 6 pin ones on an RJ 11 format.

Absolutely... Normally, the pinout should be:

1 - White/Orange
2 - Orange/White
3 - White/Green
4 - Blue/White
5 - White/Blue
6 - Green/White
7 - White/Brown
8 - Brown/White

If your wires don't have these colors, it's probably not Cat5e

Your jacks should look like this from behind:

If your jacks have screws, it's not suitable for Cat5e. Make sure you keep the twists as close to the jack as possible...

Heh.. sorry shwoff and chacal.. While you are technically correct on the point, I have personal experience that says it doesn't. I've run hundreds of miles of the stuff and tested them. The signals were clean enough to support GB connections as long as the terminations were good and the cable wasn't damaged.

And there are many different types of terminators. Not just the ones you showed showoff.

Of course, there are now many different qualities of Cat5e cables and terminators on the market so.. I cannot say it will always work but I have yet to run into a case where it wouldn't work to spec.

BTW, got it wired up and working great. Just looked at the cable that I was going to put into the jack and lined up the wires with the correct ones on that one, and all was good first try.
