what is the command to...
so im giving my old laptop to my parents to fuddle around with, whats the command to just set it back to the basics and wipe out all the passwords and what not. do i need recovery discs? i dont know where the recovery discs are right now but just want to clean it up. thanks!

If you want to reset everything back to the manufacturer settings then you must reinstall using the recovery discs. Ensure you back up all the data you want to keep before doing this as it will delete everything on your computer... EVERYTHING. How the recovery discs actually work depends on the manufacturer but you usually have two choices: destructive recovery and non-destructive. Destructive will reset everything to the condition the computer was in when you first opened the box and powered it on. Non-destructive just repairs the OS, most settings and software will still be on your computer--I personally don't like this option as it can lead to other problems later on.
If you want to reset all account/profile related settings (passwords, certain user settings, et cetera) then you'd just create a new profile and delete the old one.
The command I think you are referring to is called "format" which, in simple terms, just wipes out that data on a partition and sets up a file table.
