video card problems

when i turn my computer on my monitor just shuts off. the on off switch turns orange. then i took my card out and set pc back to onboard graphic card and everthing works fine. i never had a problem before with my card just started happening couple days ago.

i have a GeForce 7800 BFg
my monitor is a 17 inch lcd sony

when you put the video card back in does it work then? did you install any driver updates or maybe change your resolution to something that your monitor could not handle? when did it first happen or what were you doing when it first happened?

no it dosent work its been out for like a week tried it yesterday samething.didnt install any new drivers. i tried on 3 different monitors and they all just shut down and go into like a safe mode. its not the power supply because the pc turns on and loads up just the monitor wont work.

Actually it could be your power supply, if your video card doesn't egt enough power you'll get this problem.
Try your video card in another computer and see if the problem still exists.

I hope your Power Supply is a good brand name with 500+ watts to run a 7800.
If you don't know your PSU reed what the side says on the rails 12V.
I burned up a PSU when BF2 released its first patch, the PSU worked fine before then. Also when I baught my 7800GS I had to buy another PSU(Corsair FTW).
A PSU that wont support your card, could burn it up really fast. You may have fried your card with an unsufficient PSU, making it not work in any PC.

When I asked about your PSU, it wasnt just fluff, been there, done that.

I hope the card is under some sort of warranty. Here are some tips for drastic trouble shooting:
If you look at the card, are there any blackened spots or components? If there are any electrolytic capacitors (they look like cans) do any have the tops that are puffed up, or leaking? Was the card's fan still working before it died and does the fan still run when powering up now. If you can still use the onboard connector (with the vid card installed) when windows boots up, does it still show in device manager?
If you are using the DVI connector, can you try the 15 pin vga (analog) connector? Can you try the card in another PC?

Feel free to mention which high quality power supplies you would suggest. I for one think that $65 for a top of the line 750watt PSU with 85% efficiency is a great price no matter what Kracker might have hooked up to his rig, maybe his wife is still charging her black dildo with the USB port.

Corsair anyway! best power/silent for the money.
If you gonna go for sli take at least 650w.

But you can take Corsair 450w, If you go up to 550w it have modular cabels.

But are your sure it´s the Psu that´s is broken?

See if fan is rotating on your videocard, test to put in the second Pci-E if you have that.

Have you Oc anything?

Go to bios and set Pci-E to 100Mhz instead of auto.

Have you molex connector or a 6 pins?

If you have 6 pins and using this below, you cant take the power from only one lines from the psu. Use 2 seperate lines to connect the adapter.


If you have A molex(4 pins often white) test to switch all cables in the case.
And dont connect anything else on that to your vidcard.
on the second cable from Psu use only dvd/hdd/fans.

In the post where I mentioned the PSUs to buy I said "IF" its the problem.

Also my graphics card's fan worked fine and I still had no picture with my old Apevia520Watt PSU, but I still had no picture on the screen.
Sent card back, got new one, worked for 2 days, same problem.
Sent card back got new one, fan worked, no picture. Bought new Corsair520Watt PSU, everything worked great.

FWIW, I would NOT suggest anyone ever buying an Apevia PSU.... EVER.

i took it to best buy they hooked it up and said it was working fine so maybe ill get a power supply and see what thet does

Kracker don't worry much about the installation of the PSU, they are rather simple, I was kinda dreading mine when I had to do it, but it was easy cake honkey!
