Doom $60.00?

Thu Jan 22, 2004 8:29 am

No way on GOD's green earth am I paying $59.99 for a game. id will get the point I hope about the price and start to reduce. If not, I would say the gaming community needs to boycott that game until a more reasonable price is given. I'm sure allot of money was used on development. But $60.00? Now they'lll start to gouge us on prices and claim piracy made them do it. If this game takes off at $60.00 watch how many anticipated titles follow suit.

Hello X-Box Live.

Yep, this is true everywhere i've looked at prices for it. It SUCKS, as $60 is entirely too much!

On the other hand, there really isint too much we can do about it..

Except for not buying it... ;)

Give it a couple of months. It'll go down. I don't anticipate this game doing too well out of the gate, sure it'll have the support of hard-core gamers with serious rigs, but short of that, there will be lots of people with machines incapable at playing the game at a decent resolution. Not to mention, there are alot of people (like myself) who don't mind waiting a couple of months to buy a game to save themselves a little bit of cash. I predict it dropping by $20 within the first three months of release.

55 bucks at EB, but still, i hear what your saying

My roomate is insistent that his 2-year old rig will be capable of running it. I keeping telling him he's going to have to upgrade but he doesn't believe me. Oh well, he'll get the point when he goes and burns his $60 then realizes he's going to have to spend a couple hundred more on hardware...

Here's how you get your point across. Tell him to DL the Far Cry and play that. He'll get the hint.

hmmm......yet another reason to snag HL2!

This is not the first $60 game, nor will it be the last.

Think of all the money that has been dumped into makign this game. Are they supposed to take a loss just so you save $10?

Thu Jan 22, 2004 1:02 pm

Jesus Jimmy. Not saying they need to take a loss. I'm sure the development costs are the same with many of the newer games but they are still able to charge $50.00 and lower. Just that the costs of PC games are bordering on the cost of a Gamecube console. Just doesn't track. This will make more kids look for rips of Doom3 not help the sales. In fact, at $60.00 they will almost certainly cannibalize their sales volume.

Living in Canada, I'm use to higher prices for games. Many games that I buy are around 59 bucks, I have even payed 69 for some. if it's a good game, I don't mind paying an extra 10, or even 20 bucks. I get more enjoyment out of PC games than I do dishing out $20 for a movie, and I can play the game over and over again, so paying a bit more for a game doesn't bother me at all. heck, BF has given me entertainment for over a year. If Doom III/HL2 do that, I'll get more than my moneys worth

They have an all new engine(lots of coding), the game has a huge budget and has been in development for a long time. i woudl not be suprised it the cost so far dumped into this game is about twice that of your above average game.

The actual cost of these types of games for the company to make is almost always under 20 dollars.

Its just like automobiles where you buy from a distributor. The car you buy from the dealer for 25,000 cost them 15,000 from the manufacturer.

Now Carmack being the self righteous bastard he is, he is probably charging 30 bucks a shot and the distributors are passing that price rise on to you. C'est la vie (sp?)

But Carmack and Id software never design games for the current baseline configuration. They love to go cutting edge and that results in slower sales after all the cutting edge toy type guys buy their copy. That is until the rest of us upgrade so we can play their damn good games that change the entire industry.

And f.y.i Carmack is involved in the X-prize and has his own ship entered into the competition. He undoubtedly needs cash for that. Which is cool if he manages to win. The X-prize will throw a monkey wrench into NASA and hopefully get private industry involved in space again.

(Can I wander any further over the map? or was that enough?)
