I think Canadians have to pay a small tax on blank CDs, and that covers (supposedly) whatever losses the music companies might have from song swapping.

Those Damn Canadidians!
What is wrong with those people! There is something obviously wrong when a loaded (read:extremely wealthy) lobbyist group can't get their own legislation passed irregardless of the wants of the people! That would never happen in America!
You silly Canucks.

It's more than that - there are incidental levies on most forms of recordable media. There's an ongoing fight to include everything from hard drives to memory sticks, because they 'might' be used for sharing copyrighted material. So a company buying blank media to backup their financial records pays the same tax as the university student making mp3 compilations for all his buddies.
It's completely bogus, but it's just like most other things in this country - everybody shares the cost, regardless of end usage. Socialism in action. And since the taxes are fairly well hidden and don't seem to affect the market price much, we don't really care. No lawsuits, no RIAA, no hassles. Just plenty of filesharing.

I think you have a typo in your topic?? it says why canada rules? you can edit your own posts you know

It only covers the losses due to traditional copying (burning CDs). File sharing is relatively new phenomenon and the laws haven't followed yet. Don't worry, money talks, no doubt the music industry lobby will have the laws changed within the next years. Meanwhile...

you spelt it right. it's suppose to have an E.
All i did was put dashes between the syllables because that's how that one guy in Lord of the Rings says potatoes. "you know, PO-TA-TOES!! YOU STICK THEM IN A STEW" (or something along those lines)
