Band Of Brothers just p*ssed me off.

On tonight's episode (Why We Fight), Easy Company discovers a Nazi Work Camp. While this episode was very good and moving, there's one thing that bothers me.

Why the Hell does nobody in the 101st know what a Nazi Concentration Camp is? Hitler had camps all over Europe, even some in France. And when they were questioning one of the prisoners, why the Hell didn't they notice the Star of David. Criminals. Good Lord....

You won this one Spielberg but uping the Jew meter isn't going to win all the time.

Good point...

Although, I read once that the regular infantry grunts did not know about worker camps. The Allied commanders, high brass knew about them but they did not make it public knowledge. They never told the infantry about them, one would assume that they did not need other things to worry about?

As to how it was portrayed in BoB, well that's open to debate. Read the book, it's different than how the episode is...

And FYI, Spielberg didn't direct BoB, he produced it with Tom Hanks... soooo, the director's vision is different than how Spielberg would have done it. :)

Um, Ngame, the Allies did not know about them until they found them. It is not like the Nazis sent over post cards about it to their enemies.

There were rumors about them, some even reported in newspapers. However, it was thought of as a flat out lie or over exaggerations. It wasn't until they started rolling over Germany, Poland, etc when they realized exactly what the Nazis had done. Even the Allies that had the limited knowledge of them where in no way prepaired for what was actually going on.

No reason to be pissed off at the show for showing a fact.

I could be wrong, but I thought the Allies were under the impression that there were labor camps. It wasn't until they had actually found them, though, that they realized the full horror of what had been really going on.

Also considering that the series is based on the accounts of the actual members of Easy company, I think it would be safe to say that the depiction was fairly accurate.

As far as asking whether or not they were criminals, at that point in time, if you entered a place like that, would you automatically assume that it was genocide? I probably wouldn't, I'd hope that there was some other reasonable explanation for it - such as that the prisoners were criminals. In fact, I'd hope that were the case, as opposed to what the truth actually was. Just imagine how hard it was for these guys (the soldiers) to comprehend what was going on there - I'm sure it took a while for it to sink in, too. I'm sure that they lost alot of faith in their fellow man.

Actually I have read that the Allied higher command echelons had inklings of what these camps where suppossed to be but supressed parts of the information because they didn't want Allied soldiers going on killing sprees amongst the german populace in some kind of vengeance frenzy.

If I saw that kind of stuff and I was in their position, any German who relativley LOOKED like a Nazi would get a knife up his ass, twisting all around. Sons of... it's inhuman. The BoB depiction of the camps was awesome. They showed how horrible it was - the reaction of the soldiers, of the prisoners, of the townspeople was a good portrayal.

Sadly, we actually have to make sure this doens't happen again - theres still Nazi crap and KKK and all the ignorant sheep-raper's (no offense Doom :P ) crap.

First of all, thanks to each and every one of you that wrote rave reviews about Band of Brothers. I've just finished watching the final episodes. I got them via my NetFlix subscription.

It was truly excellent.

Getting back to Agent's "read the book" statement.... For those of you who've seen the mini-series and read the book, do you highly recommend the book as well?

Yes.

Spielberg didn't direct an episode but Tom Hanks did I believe. Forget which one though...was it 9? Anyway, episode 9 pretty much depicts how such encounters were for the average g.i. joe. It was well done.

The sad thing is, these sorts of things continue to this day. In the recent past, in Rwanda, and now in Somalia..

Here's a web sites (and another) mentioning some of the other "holocausts" that have occurred in the 20th century.

The first includes this thought provoking quote:
"A dozen deaths is a tragedy; a million deaths, a statistic." -- Joseph Stalin
