I don't know that there is a proper orientation. Think of it as looking at the back of a real flag as it waves in the breeze. Perhaps there is a proper orientation when it's applied as a patch on a uniform. Anyone know?

Yes, it is correct. Saw it on an episode of Mail Call. If I remember correctly, they explained that it was so no matter which direction the soldier was facing, the flag would always be going in the same direction, so that it "wouldn't look like we were running away".

No, every country's ass the US has saved has pretty much gone cold turkey on Iraq. Plus France and Germany have almost no militaries so it's not like they could have done anything in Iraq.
