Radar Detectors

Postby Mighty Mazz » Mon May 17, 2004 9:25 pm

OK so today like 30 secs after I pull out of my driveway to go to work I get pulled over for "Speeding" 56mph in a 30mph street (which is ludacris as its like swamplands on both sides of the street) So now I have a $198 dollar ticket to pay to this jerkoffs salary cuz hes protecting the residents in the area .. ME from who ME?!!

All venting aside I have decided to make the investment in a radar detector and was wondering if any of you have used any and what their usefullness has been to you?

Oh and for those of you not in the know flash your damn headlights if you see a PIG sitting in one of those damn speed traps.

Just pisses me off that all these jerkoffs due is hide and set traps on obvious spots where any rational driver would go above the limit. While the real trouble makers are wreaking havoc elsewhere.

There goes my week. :( :( :wall:

Why can't this be like Poland. My dad tried paying off a cop one time who stopped him for speeding, and the cop ending up giving me the money because I was in the seat behind the driver, we got off with a warning only.

I do know a loophole how to keep the ticket off your record. You just give them a few extra dollars in your check so they have to send you a check back. If you dont cash this check your infraction basically gets lost in the system. This lawyer friend of my fathers explained it to me once.

Some of those are a bit pricy I found a neat little website with this guy named Radar Roy who is an expert in this field:

Looks to me like PNI is the most cost effective solution. Some interesting stuff tho. Like all those radar jammers you hear about on the radio that offer to pay any ticket you get once you buy their product are all peices of junk and dont work.

I heard of that, I had my share of speeding tickets in the past and they suck, especially those speed traps. anyway some states it's illiegal to use a radar detector, and even if you have one you can still get a ticket, my advice is use cruise control if you have it just set it under the limit and enjoy the ride, well that is if you use the highway maybe on longer drives.

defend yourself in court, if your lucky he wont show, if he does, ask him if the radar gun is still in calibration check the stickers on it. (if not it will get thrown out), also question any before and after test to make sure the radar gun was operating correctly, (we had to use 2 different tuning forks (that also had to be calibrated) before & after each ticket to make sure the radar gun didnt malfunction.

Now if there using a laser thats a different ball game but can still be beat in court just tougher.

Vascar which i doubt he got you with can be shot through of holes real easy.

Radar detectors are pointless. A cop will keep it off until he sees a speeder. He then turns it on and tags you.

Your best bet is to not do almost double the speed limit. That should help to prevent what happened to you.

I have a Valentine 1 detector. VERY effective, although a bit pricey... when I got it a few years ago, it was the best on the market... haven't done much research on it sinse then, but it is damned nice. Has saved me at least it's cost in tickets since I got it...

It will pick up a radar source almost a mile away. Even if it's weak, because the cop isn't pointing it at the time, if he has it on, it will pick up a weak signal... also has directional arrows to tell where the source is coming from, and tells how many sources...

Downside is it's a bit too sensitive sometimes, and picks up a lot of door openers... you have to get a feel for where the usual radar sources are in your area to know if it's a cop or not... on the highway though, it is the best thing since sliced bread... very effective :)

Hehe I must admit this is happening more often lately, and it pains me to admit it:D , but I have to agree with Jimmy.

Simplest way to avoid this is don't speed. Wherever you are going is still gonna be there in an extra five minutes. Problem being on time? leave earlier.

If you stick within 5 miles of the speed limit. i.e.70 in a 65 you'll never get pulled over. The cops are looking for the clowns, like you:D j/k, who are doing double the speed limit.

They look for the egregious speeders and the guys who like to dart in and out of lanes.

And if/when you do fight it don't take any compromises. They like to say "Just pay 50 bucks and we'll consider the matter closed" when you do that it is considered an admission of guilt and it goes on your record. Fight it and get it dropped and it goes bye bye. Its worth a couple of hours in court to get rid of it.

I have a friend that was going to do this with a ticket he got in Kentucky, about 2 hours from where he lived. After checking into it, he found out that if he contested it and won he would not have to pay the $150 ticket. However, if he contested it and lost they would add court fees on to the fine and it would cost him about $900. He paid the fine.

Ok I have some news on this whole ticket thing and need your advice once again.

So I get home today and get a message from Officer jerkbag that he made a mistake it's $196 not $198 ... ok. So I do some more research look up state statute and regulations listings. And what have we here on the ticket it states I was "Speeding - (Stat/Ord.No) 14-217(b)" Ok this statute (14-217(b) does not exist. Also there is something scribbled over above it with a diffrent number and descripiton. Personally the way the guy came off is like he had no idea what he was doing.

And just for the record let me state that I highly doubt i was going 56mph maybe 45mph but its his word against mine. Kinda funny how the law for speeding is 56mph and up as 55mph and under is an infraction rather then a violation wich is like $50 as opposed to the $200 outrage. He just happened to clock me going 56mph right... oooh it makes me so mad.

Think about it I live like 15 secs down the road and its right after a big hill (going up) and my beat up Jetta dont accelerate that fast. :(
