Day after tomorrow movie thread

Postby shockwave203 » Thu Jun 03, 2004 1:58 am

*SPOILERS*

Did anyone see this movie yet? I loved it. It's not scientifically sound, and some things in the story left more to be desired (the wolfs chasing the kids on the oil tanker) but the special effects were totally amazing. It's more of a "turn your brain off and watch the eye candy" type of a show.

I'm a big fan of "destruction" movies, and this one certainly doesn't disappoint.

The series of tornadoes which completely destroyed downtown Los Angeles had to be my fav part of the show. Seeing New York being burried under a giant wall of water was also a sight to see.

Anyone else enjoy it this much? I'm probably going to see it atleast once more in theatres before I buy it on DVD.

CGI wankness. Why can't they make a film now without making it look like a f**king cartoon. It's like those 1000 ships in troy 'a cgi marvel' as 'Empire' film magazine called them, marvel my ass they looked shite.

I read a lot of really bad reviews on the movie as did some of my friends. Now nobody will go see it even if it is just for the "eye candy". I guess it can wait for DVD. Luckily, I have a wide-screen TV. :)

The science is bunk, the story and dialogue is pulp, the characters are flat, and the special effects are corny but fantastic... everything a good disaster flick should be! Add onto this a political preachiness that is so over the top it's funny, and I think it makes for a decent (not great) summer movie.

I would say, if you're looking for something to do and don't have any better ideas, it's not a bad fall-back.

Pudrik, I agree completely. I thought the lead meteorologist was a little too serious, like he was incapable of showing some other emotion than frowning the entire time.

Worst part of it is, all the good parts they've already shown during the previews. Ugh, I hate it when they do that.

Good movie though if you have nothing else to do.

ARGH! Can't stand preachy WRONG movies. Now we are going to have a few more idiots running around talking about 'lowering their carbon".

I could buy into a rock smacking into earth and causing untold damage. Deep Impact and Armageddon were ok movies.

The last couple of disaster flicks were so preachy and just plain STUPID I can't stand it! The Core? Please! and now this lump of shit.

There are so many things wrong with so many aspects of it that I can't even suspend disbelief enough to enjoy it. I find it easier to believe in SpiderMan than this bunk. The heat neccesary to melt that much Ice that fast to cause the tidal wave action you see would heat the atmosphere up so much we would all be dead from it.

They need to make a realistic move like Mega-Tsunami. When Cupra Viejo in the Canaries goes it would cause a flood even more devestating to the entire east coast of the US and what's more could actually be beleivable.

I'll go rent all of the Airport disaster movies before I see this lump of shit. George Kennedy's acting is more belivable than anyone in this movie.

well i havent seen it yet, but i really want to. Any movie that deals with mass destruction is pretty good in my books. Of course i am the same person who loves the movies Sniper, and Monster Squad.

Col. I guess you just don't have the same distaste for your fellow man that the rest of us do... so that you'll buy anything just to see them get wacked in new and terrifying ways. :D

What makes it good is that it is so far over-the-top preachy that every time it makes you chuckle. You gotta enjoy the ignorance of Hollywood. The movie-makers thought this would help their cause, when instead it takes a reasonable scientific theory and makes it look like total bunk.

So far I haven't read any stories about what kind of effect it's having on the general public, but I think the movie is so bad (but in a good way) that people aren't paying it much serious mind, and just see it like Armegeddon or Independance Day.

PS As for the actors, Col, Jake Gylenhaal and Ian Holm are both very good actors, and do well with the material they have in this film. I don't hold it against them... they gotta pay the bills, too.

You have to keep in mind that it's a movie. just a movie, not a documentary on global warming. ofcourse the events are going to be totally wrong. It wouldn't make for an exciting movie if the global climate changed SLOWLY over 300 years.

It was a disaster flick with an 'ok' story, but ofcourse the science in the movie is not going to reflect anything close to realistic when you're dealing with climate change.

leave your brain at home for this one, and just enjoy watching the effects.
