new monitor?
I'm down to my last dinosaur monitor. Will be looking for a replacement soon, and would like some advice on a good one for gaming. I want a 21" or larger, can be a refurb, but don't know a good supplier. Thanks.

The first question is.. CRT or LCD? 21" or larger.. I would assume CRT. I have a 21" Cornerstone (nice, but there are much better monitors out there now for a lot less than I paid) I think you can get a NEC 22" CRT for about $600. Is that within your budget?

Which brand/model? I was looking at LCD's at one point, but cost/ghosting made me choose CRT. Even if there is "no ghosting" with an LCD, it's a non-issue with CRT.
I have a Sony Trinitron Multiscan E440 19" CRT. It's nice, I love it, I'm sure you could find it in 21" or greater. Though 19" is already heavy enough

Wow, I didn't know the prices on 21" monitors dropped that much. It looks like around $400-450 will get a decent CRT.
So I'm straight on this, what is the viewable area on a 19" LCD compared to a 21" CRT?
Also, for an LCD, how much can one expect to pay for GOOD gaming? The ones I've seen weren't that impressive, but that doesn't mean anything as I don't know much about them and they were OEM.

RC.. Just came across this review. Haven't had a chance to read it yet. Might be worth reading.

BTW... I like my 21" Cornerstone.. but it is HUGE.. like 73 lbs. You have to admit the LCD's are pretty sweet. If you only play games then a CRT might be the way to go, but text is looks awesome (hell.. everything looks great on an LCD).
I think ghosting/artifacts is almost becoming a non-issue. Of course you are going to pay a premium for the LCD, especially the ones with a higher refresh rate.

I recently purchased this 21 inch monitor by Viewsonic. The refresh rates are fairly high (1280x960=100hz 1600x1200=85hz) and I'm quite happy with the image quality. (although it doesn't show true blacks like my smaller monitor does)

I've read a lot of great things about the 21-22in NEC monitors that are within the 400-600 dollar range. The other brands I'm not familiar with but I'm sure they also have some great models to choose from.
I agree with Major Sonar about the LCDs. You're definitely going to be paying a lot more for the higher quality models compared to the CRTs. IMO the LCDs still aren't up to the color range or contrast of a high end CRT but that gap is becoming smaller and smaller each year.

Maximum PC has rated this monitor the best above any in existence for years.

I have a Viewsonic 19 inch and its great... If thier 21s possess the same image quality, i would definetly consider one...
I picked my 19 inch refurbed for less than half price and it failed the second week, but i sent it in and viewsonic had it back in no time and its still working now!

I have a 19" viewsonice crt at work that died in about a month, disappeared for about 2 weeks for repairs, came back, and died again in about an hour. Not too happy about that, but it's a nice image.
If you're looking at a sony, look for those 2 horizontal lines before you buy it. I bought one, brought it home, went crazy looking at those things for a week, took it back, and got a nice viewsonic like at work.
Some of those lcd's in the store look super nice, too bad they cost so much.

Might want to try a Phillips 21". They are about the same physical size as a regular 19" and are supposedly super quiet.

Good LCD gaming monitors? Take a look at the Samsung SyncMaster series. Very good stuff, made for things like Gaming. I know my friend had the 191t, and a 9800 pro, and loves it. Quality.
I was lucky enough to get a 15" SyncMaster 151v for $150. Yes, only 15", but have been gaming with it for over a year now, and have 0 complaints.

I have an NEC 21" now, but suspect it is starting to get weak. It's a monster.
I don't think I'm gonna spend the $1400+ for that Sony LOL, but thanks anyway.
Most of the monitors at work are Viewsonics. The guys say for graphics they don't care for the LCD yet, but maybe they're cheaper models. Most say the CRT are still superior for CAD work, so would assume better for gaming?
So for the money it looks like a CRT will be the ticket. I haven't bought a monitor in over 7 years and haven't kept up much on the models/prices; can't complain since I've been using freebie 20-21".
Does anyone own that Phillips? For $349 it's tempting. Gee, last I remember 21" couldn't be bought for less than $800 or so. Seeing how I'm using these old clunkers, even a lower end (read $$$) would seem to be better. And the refurbs....where's a good place to get one?
