The best flight sim for online is Fighter Ace. Nothing compares if you like large online battles. The planes are very detailed and there's several dozen (if not hundreds) of models to choose from. It's pay to play though, and the guys there take it quite seriously. I had a lot of fun with Air Warrior III as the bombers would hold a full crew (7 in a B17), but it was discontinued by EA.
I have M$ Flight sim 2002 and yes it's hard. You have to know pilot lingo to fly online or you'll feel pretty out of place. It is fun though, but don't expect any fast action stuff....it's not battle oriented. Plus, the controls are quite complicated.
I bought IL2 when it first came out and played for quite a while, and there are many custom planes available. I haven't played the latest version.

Air Warrior III was awesome when it was around. My favorite position was tail gunner. Funny how none of the bombers I crewed were ever shot down. Hehe.

I remember the physics were a bit messed up for the B17 and they could turn like a fighter. It was hilarious to be a waste gunner in one battling it out with another B17 and a full crew. They ended up patching it so it couldn't be turned too much; it would just break up at that point. I was disappointed when EA trashed it.
The radios inside the planes were neat. You needed them for the long bombing runs that would sometimes last a 1/2 hour or more. I liked the ball turret myself, seeing the enemy fighters coming up underneath.
If planes could be loaded up with crew in Fighter Ace it would be really great. As it is now it's still a good game. One time I had two accounts. My son and I joined a squadron with 20+ P38's on a mission. It was quite a site to see all those planes taking off. It's not uncommon to see over 200 planes on one map (they are huge). Every kind of plane in WW2 is available.
Once BF42 came out I pretty much stopped flying sims, but kept one account for my son. I still can't get used to the way the planes fly compared to FA etc. Oh well.

In your opinion, is FA worth the monthly fee?

I've never played AH, so it may be worth a try. I can't believe how small the download is; 35mb?? FA is like 400mb.
I couldn't find much info on how the game works as far as teams etc. Is it country vs country? FA has several rooms you can join or create your own. I usually played in the territorial combat which entailed 5 countries: Germany, Japan, England, US, Russia.
