Leaked ATI/NVDA farcry benchies

this round looks promising for ATI again.

since Farcry uses a ton of PS2.0 and is a DX9 game, one would think that future DX9 games using PS2.0 would run better on ATI as well *cough* HL2 *cough*

ooooohhhh ahhhhh numbers and pretty charts

Looks like the ATI Radeon X800 XT brings home the bacon in every test.

Just tell me the damage to get one...

Mon May 03, 2004 11:35 pm

I read somewhere that the X800pro was $299, X800XT $399, and the X800XT platinum is going ot be $499, but I have no idea whether these are true or not.

I hope the X800pro is $299, because it beats the 9800XT hands down and isn't that much more than the 9800 was going for a few months ago, if I remember correctly.

wait for dx9.0c and the farcry shader 3.0 patch to be tested. Those benches will swing nvidias way quite easily.

^ I've yet to see the difference between PS2.0 and 3.0 compared in pictures.

I know that 3.0 carries a different instruction set, and that PS2.0 cards can 'mimmick' 3.0 by sending different instructions, giving you basically the same thing.

we'll have to see what's up with that.

3.0 shaders can either be used for a performance increase or better visuals. Far Cry's 3.0 patch uses 3.0 for performance. Trust me, nv40 is going to see a nice boost.

I hope so. If eventually Nvidia's visual quality can match ATI's when it comes to farcry (look at tomshardware review of the 6800 and you'll see what I mean) then Nvidia will be better than ATI.

ATI is just as fast as Nvidia, but Nvidia has more features. so if they're both equally priced, offer the same performance and same visual quality, nvidia is the winner because of the extra features.

here is what Crytek had to say about 3.0 shader advantages:

As a developer, what are the most convincing arguments for the use of Shader 3.0 over 2.0?

· In VS3.0 shader model actually is possible to support general displacement mapping (with smart shader design when vertex shader has to do something during waiting for texture access).

· In PS3.0 shaders it’s possible to decrease number of shaders using dynamic branching (single shader for general lighting) and in such way decrease number of shader switches, passes, and as result increase speed, and also we can utilize dynamic conditional early reject for some cases in both PS and VS and this also will increase speed. As to NV40 generally possible to use co-issues better to take advantage of super-scalar architecture (we can execute 4 instructions per cycle in a single pipeline).

· We can handle several light sources in single pixel shaders by using dynamic loops in PS3.0.

· We can decrease number of passes for 2-sided lighting using additional face register in PS3.0.

· We can use geometry instancing to decrease number of draw-calls (remove CPU limitations as much as possible).

· We can use unrestricted dependent texture read capabilities to produce more advanced post-processing effects and other in-game complex particles/surfaces effects (like water).

· We can use full swizzle support in PS3.0 to make better instructions co-issue and as result speedup performance.

· We can take advantage of using 10 texture interpolators in PS3.0 shader model to reduce number of passes in some cases.

yeah, well they can say a lot of things when it comes to PS3.0, but Nvidia also had a ton of fancy new features on the FX5800 which supported a ton of 'new features' and we all know how that turned out.

If PS3.0 offers an increase in shader speed, then it will be worth it. but if not...then I think ATI will be able to hold it's own.

I mean, games arent even utilizing PS2.0 to a large extent yet. Farcry uses them...but ATI beats farcry in visual quality AND speed. It's obvious the 6800 (which supports 3.0) doesn't make 2.0 render any faster. so it'll be interesting to see if 3.0 will close the gap with NVDA 2.0 and ATI 2.0

Tue May 04, 2004 6:57 am

Aghh.. so closee.. will buy.. whichever one.. is ... cheaper...

For me personally, 128bit precision and PS 3.0 shaders = longevity in the 6800U. Those THG charts are only showing Farcry pre-PS 3.0 patch, and there have been other charts leaked which show both cards in an almost dead heat. So for me, I'll stick with Nvidia for my main and ATi for my second gaming rig.

Longevity means little considering that most who buy this new generation of cards will also be upgrading when the next generation of cards comes out. By then, few PS3.0 games will be out, just like PS2.0 games are few and far between and a new generation of cards are coming out now and a ulta new PS4.0 Turbo Ultra SuperXT version will be included with those new cards.......
