Air National Guard in 60s - while not as dangerous as Viet Nam, Bush's unit was active doing counter-bomber intercept patrols during the Cold War. Bush lost a couple squadron-mates to accidents during his time in. Yeah, it was probably a cake duty to get away from going to war, but better than being a draft-dodger.

Who are we to second guess any of these men?

Would YOU have gone to fight in Viet Nam?

Have you signed up to fight in Iraq?

Do you think military service is a necessary prerequisite for being President?

Then don't make an issue of it. I base my decisions on how good a job I think they will do now, not what job they did when they were in their 20s. Character and ability change after three decades.

Depends on which phase. The early phase, being fought properly, or the later phase, a politician-run blood bath. people forget that when Vietnam first broke out it had a very large approval rate, then dropped over time as the running of it got wrose and worse.

You know it is against the law for the President to begin funding a war without concent, correct? Bush used money from the war against terror to fund the start up on the War in Iraq. That is who is leading this country now, and it is just one instance of huge question marks on this mans term. Handing away contracts to companies that did not have to bid on them, that just happen to be the company Vice President ran? Um, hello? Just another instance of 'WTF is going on in DC?'

So, you mean you would have gone in the early phase? The phase where Ho Chi Mihn was pleading with the French for Vietnamese freedom and an adoption of Western/European ways? Do some research into the Vietnamese people and Mihn during WWII - the way Mihn and his people sided with the Allies against the Japanese, and how England, Roosevelt, and the other European powers told him to basically go fly a kite and bow down to French rule.

Yeah, I got the memo. I was refering to questioning their past actions. I fully support questioning the job they do in their elected roles. After all, they work for us. I don't however, think it is our place to decide whether they were brave or not to go to a war that many in the US felt was unjust and a waste - like you do about the Iraq war now. Well, it is a juvenile term, but the point being made is that while Bush has taken a firm stand on his convictions despite the criticism of his political opponents--which many would call leadership--Kerry has been plagued with accusations of being wishy-washy and not strong on defense. I wouldn't call that being a "puss," but I do doubt his ability to lead. (Politically speaking, of course, not withstanding his small-unit leadership, which is a different animal.)

Good point, however, Congress does control appropriations and could yank it away if it was in their political interest. The fact that war was not "declared" is only a matter of semantics. Functionally, Congress approved Bush's actions through a resolution and controls the purse strings that fund the war effort. Enough of the public still supports the war, and Congress reflects this.

I'm having a hard time reconciling this "Bush is a War dodger, His daddy got him a cushy Guard position" with 8 years of defending draft dodging and "I didn't inhale".

How about some of those other slackers that were President that never served. Useless guys like FDR or Abraham Lincoln. Now there were a couple of military slackers that commanded our nations armed forces during a time of conflict! Lets bash them too!

It wasn't an issue when Clinton was president (to me) and it isn't an issue with George either (again to me, but then again I am not out for "my party").

Hell the last President we had that actually was in the military during a war and fought was George Sr. To most of you guys arguing you were just teenagers then. Name me the last president prior to him that served during a war? I will bet you have a hard time doing it.

I refer you to H J Res 114 of the 107th Congress, (P.L. 107-243), found here. Specifically, the part which reads:

SEC. 3. AUTHORIZATION FOR USE OF UNITED STATES ARMED FORCES.

(a) Authorization.--The President is authorized to use the Armed Forces of the United States as he determines to be necessary and appropriate in order to--
(1) defend the national security of the United States against the continuing threat posed by Iraq; and
(2) enforce all relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions regarding Iraq.

You have yet to explain your insult to the Guard by implying that one is "hiding" from something by joining the National Guard instead of the active duty Air Force. Perhaps one might join the military because he loves this country, as I do. Perhaps one would join the military because he wants other people of the world, much less fortunate than himself, to be able to experience something that even resembles the freedoms we enjoy. Perhaps one is an idealist, like me, and gets angry at the hatred directed at the things like peace and freedom our nation and our allies stand for, and wants to be able to defend their home, family, and friends from those people. Or perhaps one is just too selfish and cynical to believe any of that, and would rather criticize though who have a larger vision for the world. That's one of the beauties of freedom - anyone has the right to join or not, to love the country or not, to believe in peace and freedom or not.
