Linux

Tue Jul 20, 2004 11:21 pm

I'm going to have to use my old PC when I RMA this one, it doesn't meet xp minimum requirements and I don't have my win98 cd anymore sooooooooooo......... linux.

I already had red hat 9 cds so I installed that on my old harddrive.

It runs, but takes 2 or 3 minutes to even open mozzilla and change between tasks, as long as I keep with 1 app at a time runs great.

It's a pentium 1, 133mhz 128MB of edo ram.
Is there anything I can do to reduce loadtimes on it?

Tue Jul 20, 2004 11:55 pm

This is stretching the minimum requirements a bit.

Tue Jul 20, 2004 11:56 pm

All the linux documents I read say minimum requirements for linux is well below what I have running it now.

Depends on what you install. Don't expect a GUI to be blindingly fast with that setup.

I've ran servers on P233s with 256 MB, but they were running a stripped-down Debian 2 and no GUI.

Wed Jul 21, 2004 12:19 am

I tried running RH9 before on my old computer, was "blindingly" slow and people got mad at me saying I installed it wrong and that it should be running faster than win98. o_o

I had other people tell me that I needed to customize it and turn off the extra things. ANd on linux I"m completly lost without a gui since I don't know anything about it other than the most basic commands.

Perhaps you installed too many services. Try seeing what's running by typing: ps aux | more

Wed Jul 21, 2004 1:06 am

Only the default ones for the "destop" install. I don't have anouther moniter so I'll try that and get back tommarow.

Ditch KDE or Gnome (not sure which you're using) in favor of the lightweight desktops --Nextstep or ICE

Fri Jul 23, 2004 4:24 am

Ok chacal I did that thing you told me to do. I think I listed all the services, their on a floppy disk I got. Windows can't make heads or tales of the file, but it can read the disk, I open it with wordpad and it reads it perfectly.

I'm not sure if I copy/paste everything from the terminal because it ends with more but I think I got the vast majority even if I didn't.

Should I just cut/paste it into this window? Or send you the file or what?

I have to say it looks allot better with gedit and wordpad's auto formatting, easier to read also. O_O

Fri Jul 23, 2004 7:49 pm

*pokes chacal with a stick* Come on, how do I turn some of those off?

Fri Jul 23, 2004 11:54 pm

Seems your Gnome GUI takes around 50% of your CPU. That's the price you pay for having a GUI. Granted, web surfing is much less fun without one :)

Nautilus is a nice file manager (like Windows Explorer), but you're paying an extra 15% for it.

Why do you have sendmail running? Even if it's using 0% CPU at the time this snapshot was taken, it still seems weird to have it there. Could be normal with Red Hat, though. Are you doing any non-web-based mail on that box? Are your running a mail server?

Same goes with sshd. If you're not running a ssh server, no need for that. Are you remote-controlling this box from outside?

Process names inside brackets mean these processes are swapped out to disk. This probably means not enough RAM.

As for turning them off, there should be a configuration menu in your GUI. Running no GUI, I'd type "killall sshd" and "killall sendmail".

Fri Jul 23, 2004 11:58 pm

I'm not remote controling the box, Like I said only things that installed it with the default desktop install are running. I'm not running a mail server, and I don't use any email type things. ATM I don't have a network card in it, but I'll pick up a cheap one from circut city before I RMA my board.

ANd will I have to do killall everytime I bootup?

Is there a way to disable nautilus? Or do I have to have it to run a gui?

Sat Jul 24, 2004 12:07 am

Also, could I bootup to terminal interface by selecting "failsafe"?

The options are
default
last used
gnome
kde
failsafe
