Off topic, but don't go too far overboard - after all, we are watching...heh.

Quite frankly...my computer is running like shit.
Ever since I uninstalled this one program, this cpu has gone to hell in a handbasket. I disabled system restore so that cannot help me. Programs suddenly won't run and other programs have uninstalled themselves (crazy shit!

). My audigy2 mediasource says it has a missing dll file, and planetside was missing a file also! Lastly, the most important thing, LIVE UPDATE for norton AV uninstalled itself.
ARGH!
Why me...why this computer...why why why why why?
Do you think it is time for a good ole' reformat?
I regularly defragment with diskeeper 8, and clear the temp file in C:\windows once a month.
I'm completely baffled with this whole situation.

Re-format and you'll never know anything was ever wrong.
It was all a dream.

Only one problem with reformatting...
It's a family cpu, so basically my whole family will be uber-pissed at me if I do it.
I'll be interrogated like a saudi at an airport.

Planetside is easy to fix, just click "Full scan" and it will scan to make sure each file is in tact and if it isn't it reconstructs them.

Tell them it broke and that's the only way to fix it.

Did someone else use the computer while you were not there?

Yeah, but I know the people who use it and they wouldn't do anything like that (in the past they haven't at least).
I just checked windowsupdate and there were 5 updates that I missed. 3 of them were security updates saying that it prevents an attacker from "controlling" my pc.
Hmm...

yeah because u could blame it on them

WTF did you uninstall? It obviously had shared files that alot of other stuff used, and so you broke alot
A sometimes (ok, often) risky maneuver is to reinstall windows WITHOUT formatting, and when it gets to the screen where you can choose to install, repair, or quit, you can try repair. Unlikely, but possible. You can even try a new install, without formatting during the install, which will try to reinstall windows over top of itself. Might fix it, but fairly unlikely (should really only be a last ditch effort prior to wiping it and doing a clean install).
If all else fails, blame someone else in the family who's not PC savvy, say they somehow got a trojan horse virus in the pc, and you had no choice but to format

Well said Bullhead. It's all about the format. If we knew what you uninstalled it might be easier to find other recovery options. Any Jeffro, you weren't going to any.....bad sites......were you?

Download all the Windows updates, burn them onto a cd. Back up your important files/documents on CD.
Reformat , reinstall, do all that.
Then, most important, use Norton's ghost and make an image of your hard drive, BEFORE you go on the internet, insert a floppy, anything like that.
Go on the internet, update your antivirus, get off the internet.
Check the CD with all the windows updates for any viruses, if none install the updates from the CD.
If all goes well, make a new image of your hardrive again..this one is the keeper as it's an image of your system with a relatively up-to-date virus and windows updates. Save this image! Then go and get your backed up files (after checking for viruses)
Now, when you get into trouble, you're just 20 minutes away from a nice clean freshly installed system using Ghost to restore. Don't bother with Windows restore options.
