Off topic, but don't go too far overboard - after all, we are watching...heh.

Trip to Europe > New video card.

Ah well. Guess my rusty old 9800 will have to do.

Just ordered doom3. Can't wait. Lots of good memories with original doom (and wolfentein).

Am looking forward to Half Life 2 as well.

I think HL2's benchmarks are more important because it will have a much larger Mod Base than D3....its multiplayer is clearly larger and more appealing....and I have an X800Pro....lol

People actually thought ATI would win in this? Interesting...

Im almost willing to wager money that nvidia will be faster in that game also.;)

I'm sure it has nothing to do with this

same things can be said about HL2 and ATI. Besides you cant really look down at a game developer for using new Dx9 features if there is hardware to support it.

That's true

Are you talking about SM3.0? What does 3.0 offer over the previous version (sm2.0?)

overall its a performance boost. It does require higher floating point precision and it has displacement mapping in VS 3.0. But generally it will be used for its branching and abiltiy to make shaders more efficient. It has the abiltiy to combine a bunch of little shader programs in to one which will reduce the number of passes. Over time you will see effects that are too complex and slow to be done with 2.0 or 2.0b.
Also as effects start requiring fp 32 precision you will start to see graphical artifacts with lower precision(ie ATI only being able to do fp 24)

have a look at this

ATI is still killing Nvidia in farcry, even with Nvidia's SM3.0 support

http://www.ixbt.com/video2/fc12-2.shtml

the new ATI X800 series partially supports most of the main improvements of SM3.0, which is EXCELLENT news for HL2 and STALKER.
